Sugar beet focus
Tried and tested varieties remain popular with growers
C
ommercially proven varie- ties from Strube continue to be popular with growers – accounting for more than 20% of sugar beet in the ground, says the company. Three varieties – Haydn, De- gas and Gauguin – are among the top performers, with some new Strube varieties in the pipeline for 2021 and beyond, says Mark Culloden, the company’s UK managing director. Haydn has been on the rec- ommended list since 2013. It is low-bolting, establishes well and has big leaves – all good attrib- utes, says Mr Culloden. “It has also performed well in recent vi- rus yellows trials,” he adds. A high-value sugar beet with the appeal of proven high yields, Haydn alone made up 10% of the
UK national crop area in 2018. Its large healthy tops cover the ground quickly and make for a handsome variety.
Degas has also been on the list since 2017, says Mr Culloden. “It is a popular variety and has the second highest sugar content on the list – which makes it a good variety for growers who have to transport beet a long way.” New for the current season is
Gauguin, a variety with a high level of tolerance to Beet Cyst Nematodes (BCN). Strube says it allows a markedly smaller in- crease in nematode populations compared with the light tolerant types or non-tolerant varieties. “It is the lowest bolting BCN tolerant variety on the list – both for early and normal sown crops. It is a good option if you want to

go early, which was a big advan- tage this year. A lot of people did go early and low bolting is impor- tant for that.”
All three varieties established well this spring – helped by a good
30mm of rain about a month ago. “There are some very good sug- ar beet crops about – but like everything else at the moment, they could do with a drink again,” says Mr Culloden.
