Sugar beet focus
High yielding variety has top sugar percentage
B
etaseed variety BTS 4100 joins the 2020 BBRO Rec- ommended List with the highest sugar content – while also offering high yields and low bolt- ing counts at early sowing. Bred by Betaseed and market- ed by Limagrain UK, BTS 4100 offers the highest sugar content of any beet variety on the list at 18.4%. It has produced high sug- ar levels consistently over the last three years in Recommended List trials, says Limagrain. In 2016, BTS 4100 yielded 18% in 2016 compared to an average sugar content of 17.7% across the recommended list trials. In 2017, it yielded 19% sugar when the national average was 18.4%. And last year, it yielded 18.4%
when the national average was 17.8%.
“Growers will recognise that on certain soil types or in diffi - cult fi eld conditions, a high sugar content can be hard to achieve,” says Limagrain sugar beet prod- uct manager Ron Granger. “In these situations a variety
such as BTS 4100 with a genet- ically high sugar content offers the best insurance for maxim- ising full yield potential, as ex- pressed in adjusted tonnes”. Along with high sugar lev-
els, BTS 4100 offers high adjust- ed tonne yields of 101.8% – an achievement Mr Granger said re- fl ected a step-up over some of the older varieties on the list. But while yield and sugar con-

tent are the top criteria for choos- ing a new sugar beet variety, fac- tors such as establishment and bolting tolerance are also impor- tant – particularly when deciding which variety is best for each in- dividual situation. “For those looking to drill in
the fi rst half of March, in an at- tempt to get crops up and away to combat virus yellows infec-
tion, BTS 4100 fi ts this drilling slot very well,” said Mr Granger. “It has excellent bolting toler-
ance and is one of only a few va- rieties on the RL, that offers no bolters when drilled in the nor- mal sowing slot.
“This is combined with good emergence characteristics and a good tolerance to rust. It is also Rhizomania tolerant.”
