Disinfectant smoke bombs help to protect stored grain vest disinfection and pest control

est control specialist Lodi UK has launched a new disinfectant product

which protects stored grain by con- trolling insects, moulds, spores, mycotoxins and bacteria. This dual approach features two smoke-bomb type products – Phobi OPP and Smoke Pro 90C. Both are highly effective, econom- ical and suitable to be used either individually or together to save time, says Lodi managing direc- tor Roger Simpson.

“While good store management and correct cleaning can help prevent grain pests and moulds these methods can only go so far. Farmers and store operators must therefore have effective additional control measures in place to pre- vent, eliminate or reduce hazards to an acceptable level.”

Phobi OPP is a brand new fungicidal, bacterial and virucid- al disinfectant smoke. Described as easy to use, Lodi says it should form an integral part of a pre-har-

programme for grain stores. Mycotoxins

The product contains orthophe- nylphenol, an antifungal agent and preservative found in lem- ons. It provides a proven mini- mum 99.9% control of fungus and moulds including aflatoxins, the most harmful type of mycotoxin. Each Phobi OPP generator pro- duces up to 250g of dry, non-corro- sive smoke, which will treat up to 450m3

and reaches all areas of the

grain store, including cracks and crevices which would otherwise harbour spores and pests. Moulds growing in grain stores and on grain can produce high- ly-poisonous food-borne myco- toxins with acute effects. Some mycotoxins cause severe illness soon after consumption of con- taminated food products, while others have major adverse effects on long-term health.

Exposure to mould spores can

also cause illness in farmers and farm workers, says Lodi. Prevent- ing mould growth in stored grain bulks is the single most effective way to manage this important hu- man health issue, it adds.

Stored pests The second product, Phobi Smoke Pro 90C, utilises a highly active pyrethroid insecticide with prov- en knock-down activity to provide long-lasting protection against a range of stored grain pests found in the UK. For professional use in emp- ty grain stores, the Phobi Smoke Pro 90C generator produces 93g of smoke which contains 6.975% Cypermethrin and penetrates normally inaccessible areas where pests can otherwise easily hide. Each generator will treat a

525m3

Both smoke-based products are said to reach all areas of the grain store

space and is approved for use against red-dust flour beetles, saw-toothed grain beetles, Indi- an meal moths, grain mites and grain weevils.
