Seven new cereal varieties feature in Syngenta plots

S

ix new barleys and a new winter wheat will be show- cased in plots by Syngen-

ta at this month’s Cereals event – taking place on12-13 June at Boothby Graffoe, Lincolnshire. New winter wheat SY Insi- tor is a high-yielding feed variety being previewed on the stand that offers a potentially wide drilling window, based on Syn- genta observations, says Syn- genta marketing manager Tra- cy Creasy.

Currently on the AHDB candi- date variety list, SY Insitor could join the ranks of other winter feed wheats – such as Graham, Gleam and Shabras – if it is recommend- ed towards the end of 2019. Plots of all four varieties will feature

on the stand. Continuing its success in hy- brid barley breeding, Syngenta will also showcase plots of three new hybrid barleys – including hybrids SY Kingsbarn and SY Baracooda, which were added to the AHDB Recommended List for 2019/20.

Both are said to offer a step up in UK treated yield over pop- ular UK hybrid Bazooka. The third new hybrid on the stand, SY Kingston, is currently on the AHDB candidate variety list. With its heritage in successful malting barley breeding, Syngen- ta will also exhibit plots of three new potential malting barley va- rieties. The fi rst is a new winter barley variety that could have

Other winter malting bar- ley plots on the Syngenta stand will include high-yielding vari- ety Electrum. Currently classi- fi ed as Provisional Approval 1 for brewing use on the MBC Ap- proved List of varieties, Syngenta hopes Electrum will soon be up- graded, Mrs Creasy adds.
