Arable No-till Groundswell event
expands again for 2019 • Soil at centre of two-day showcase • Latest direct drill machinery on show • International speakers and workshops
D
irect drilling techniques will be demonstrated by 12 machinery manufac-
turers at this month’s Ground- swell event – the two-day show focused on no-till techniques and soil regeneration.
Demonstrations on both days will illustrate seeding directly into a standing cover crop with minimal soil disturbance. The show takes place on 26-27 June at Lannock Manor Farm, West- on, near Stevenage, Hertford- shire, SG4 7EE.
Some 1400 people attended
last year’s event. Numbers this year are expected to be higher still
due to growing interest in no-till farming, the value of livestock in arable and mixed farming situa- tions – and government plans to encourage soil stewardship.
Conservsation agriculture Host farmer Paul Cherry, who farms 800ha said: “The govern- ment’s stated ambition for the fu- ture of food, farming and the en- vironment is that public money will be spent on public goods that enhance natural capital.” Defra plans to support farm- ers who undertake environ- mental measures would her- ald a new era for farming,
said Mr Cherry. He added: “For any farmer looking to adapt to this scenario while maintain- ing viability as a food producer, Groundswell is the place to be.” Described as a farming event with a festival atmosphere, visi- tors can expect to learn the prin- ciples of conservation agricul- ture, while engaging with other farmers and organisations who can help make it a reality.
Shaping the future Mr Cherry said: “Groundswell of- fers a welcoming environment for two days of information exchange with some of the world’s most ex- perienced soil caretakers – the farmers, scientists and the organi- sations who all have a role in shap- ing the future of UK farming.” Seminars and talks will show- case practical ideas ways to farm
while regenerating the soil. Work- shops and exhibitions from a range of innovative farming com- panies will take place alongside the field scale direct drill demon- strations.
Speakers will include a range of respected voices in regenerative
