THE FLOOD OF 2019

executive insight

In the spring of 1952, I was traveling with my family from our home in Lincoln, Nebraska, to visit relatives in Wichita, Kansas. Seated in the backseat of a 1949 Pontiac, I vividly recall the sights of the great flood of 1952, when we had to go around the flooding and saw cars floating in the water.

I also experienced flooding in 1984 when my business in Lincoln, Nebraska, was flooded. We cleaned up over 100 tons of debris and did not turn a wrench for six long weeks. In addition, I remember the floods of 1993 when a good portion of Des Moines was underwater.

All of these pictures and memories came to the forefront of my mind when the devastating floods occurred in March across Iowa and Nebraska. These floods affected many Iowa-Nebraska Equipment Dealers Association (INEDA) members, including their dealerships, employees, families and communities. Many suffered damage or a complete loss of their homes and personal belongings.

Help is Available

A Disaster Relief Fund, originally established by the North American Equipment Dealers Association Equipment Dealers Foundation, has funding available for dealership employees who have sustained personal losses or damage to their homes or belongings. We encourage them to contact INEDA at 800.622.0016 for additional information or complete the Disaster Relief Fund application at equip- mentdealer.org to help offset their losses.

The EDF Foundation is funded by contributions from members. We ask you to contribute generously to this fund if you have not already done so to assist deal- ership employees in need with emergency funding. INEDA will match all funds contributed by INEDA members to the EDF disaster relief fund. The need is great and the level of urgency is high. Contact INEDA for more information on how to make a contribution. As a community of dealers we can help one another sustain our industry in difficult times.

We also encourage you to reach out to your elected officials at the state and fed- eral levels to stress the importance of government assistance during disasters like these. Government officials want to know how they can help their constituents. They recognize the importance of the local businesses in their district. Pick up the phone today.
