FARMERS ACROSS U.S. ANSWER CALL FOR HAY DONATIONS


Flooding hit farm country especially hard, with some Nebraska ranchers reporting they watched helplessly as their cattle floated away, powerless to save them. However, for those ranchers with cattle that survived, keeping them healthy and fed has proven difficult.


Much of the hay and feed became waterlogged, so it cannot be fed to cattle. Mold can quickly grow in wet hay, and the chemical processes that take place in wet hay can quickly deplete its nutritional value or, in extreme cases, create fires. Some ranchers were even unable to reach their cattle due to the floodwaters.


Several groups of farmers, nonprofit organizations and even the National Guard jumped in to help, delivering hay to ranchers in need…
