14th: Dragon Boat Challenge. Up to 21 teams of 10 pad- dlers plus a drummer will be competing on the river Dart at Longmarsh. From 12pm.


20th-27th: Kingsbridge Fair Week. An action-packed week that sees the fun fair roll in to town and a programme of events and live music on the town square and in other venues across the town. Starting with the crowning of the new fair queen, there follows an evening of fire- works, five-a-side football, teddy bears’ picnic, three-legged race, big quiz, boules, dog show plus a raft race and crab catching com- petitions. The week closes with a colourful carnival procession and lantern parade.


22nd-30th: Fun family summer events, Slapton. Join us for lots of fun this summer. Activities include woodland explora- tion, bat walks, mammals and moths, seashore adventure, sur- vive in the wild, pond dipping and rocky shore walks. Booking required. 23rd-27th: Dartmouth Shake- speare Week. The cultural highlight of the events calendar in Dartmouth and south Devon. Every year the Inn Theatre Com- pany has presented Dartmouth Shakespeare Week in the open air at the beautiful Dartmouth Castle – a stunning location for a stunning production. Each year the company puts on a spec- tacular


production, and


2019 being the company’s 18th anniversary, it is set to be big- ger and better than ever. 2019’s production is Macbeth.


26th-3rd August: Arts and Crafts Exhibition, Stokenham Village Hall. There will be cakes and coffee and tea, and of course the work of around 35 exhibitors. 10am-6pm Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm Sunday.


27th-24th August: Internation- al Summer School & Festival, Dartington. In the daytime, the summer school


functions as a


summer school to musicians of a range of abilities, helping peo- ple to develop their creativity with expert tuition from world- renowned professionals. In the evenings, the summer school is transformed into a music festi- val, with incredible performances by professional tutors and occasionally students.


28th: Totnes & District Agricul- tural Show. Exciting demonstra- tions, displays and parades in the main ring as well as enter- tainment and a sheep-shearing competition. Sheep, cattle and horses compete for showing hon- ours and showjumping. There is a home and handicrafts marquee, craft tent, food hall and a large trade stands section offering a wide choice of goods and services.


31st: Yealmpton Show, Kitley Lawns. More than 300 stands,


10th: Widecombe Fair. First held in the 1850s, the fair celebrates traditional rural life and recalls the story of Uncle Tom Cobley and his friends riding to Wide- combe Fair on a grey mare.

29th-30th: Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. Competition and entertainment on and around the river. Thousands of visitors from the region, nation and the world descend on Dartmouth every August for a packed three- day programme.


September 7th: Totnes Pride. A free


family-friendly day event, with a high-street procession and a fun-filled afterparty for those aged 16-plus.


7th: Kingsbridge Show. Take your time wandering in and out of the tents and admire the entries in horticulture, floral art, home- craft and domestic pets. Outside witness the showing and judging of horses, cattle, sheep and more, then watch the grand parade for the results. Gates open at 9am.


7th-22nd: Devon Open Studios. An opportunity to meet artists in their studios, see demonstrations, listen to talks or have a go.

13th-15th: DadFest2019, Forest & Beach Centre, Beeson, near Kingsbridge. Judged the “best small event in the UK”, this is the only festival in the UK just for dads and children. DadFest is also home to the Official World Dad Dancing Championships.


14th: Chillington Show. A dog show, arts and crafts, a display of classic motor bikes, vehicles and machines plus a hog roast and local beer tent provided by South Hams Brewery. Dance demonstrations, bouncy castle, face painting, coconut shy and much, much more.


14th: Kingsbridge 800th Anni- versary. Celebrating 800 years of the town being a market town; there will be stalls on the square. medieval music and entertain- ment, plus the special offers and events in the shops.

14th: Big Night Out on the Beach, South Milton Sands. Join the National Trust rangers and south Devon AONB team for a fun-filled evening of activities to celebrate the end of the summer in style. 4pm-9.30pm.


14th-15th: Dart 10k. The aquatic equivalent of a marathon, from Totnes to Dittisham. Swimmers enjoy the shared journey together through the South Hams’ rolling hills and overgrown inlets.

6th: Totnes Raft Race. Known as the ‘River Dart Struggle’, it starts at Dart Bridge, Buckfastleigh, and runs 14km to Totnes through


a mixture of white water, fast- flowing weirs and calm stretches of the river.


9th: Goose Fair, Tavistock. Stalls and entertainment.


12th-27th: South Hams Arts Trail. The trail leads visitors to discover not only the artists and their work, but to explore the South Hams.


18th-20th: Dartmouth Food Festival. A tempting mix of deli- cious regional food and drink, chef demonstrations, workshops, lively food debates and fun for all the family. One of the high- lights of the South Hams calen- dar year and a must for all lovers of fine food and drink, much of it produced within the area.


21st-27th: Hallowscream Park, Woodlands. Meet Marty in his monster manor, join in activi- ties with Ezmeralda the Wicked Witch of Woodlands and enjoy lots of other spooky activities and rides. Extra charge applies for Marty’s Monster Manor.
