Spectacular, dangerous, breathtaking – come and find out who keeps you safe along this coastline
Start Point & Prawle Point Watching from Prawle Point
From our vantage point, two hundred feet above the sea, we maintain a visual, VHF radio, radar and computer assisted watch every day of the year during daylight hours. In 2018 we made approximately 60 reports ranging from dolphin sightings to more signif- icant events where we supplied information to the Coastguard to assist rescue operations. Our station is wholly run by highly trained volunteers and funded by the generosity of our visitors and the local community.
Every year we log about 17,000 passing ves- sels and vulnerable craft.
Watchkeepers also keep an eye on users of
the coast path, marine life and livestock in our sector. Visit
nci-prawlepoint.org.uk to find live weather information, webcam images, our con- tact details, links to our Facebook page and a
handy A5 downloadable reference card. Call the lookout by phone 01548 511259 or on VHF Channel 65 for weather information and to check your radio.
The lookout is located at the southernmost edge of Prawle Point and is close to the South West coast path.
It has fantastic views along the coast between Bolt Head and Peartree Point (near Start Point) and also about 15 miles out to sea. It is a superb place to see our ever-changing weather, passing vessels and wildlife. 2019 marks the National Coastwatch Insti- tution’s 25th anniversary and our lookout has operated continuously for 21 years. We hope you will visit our informative, inter- esting, and free interactive Visitor Centre and the Lookout, where you can talk to the watch- keepers.

PRAWLE POINT National Coastwatch
Climb to the top, see the pano- ramic views, spot marine life and passing ships and have holiday shots to remember! Discover how its beams warn
sailors of the notoriously hazardous waters around Start Point and the infamous Start Point tidal race. Over centuries, this coastline has become strewn with shipwrecks of all shapes and sizes, from war- ships and schooners to cargo ships, steamers, submarines and emigrant ships, many involving locals
daring rescues and recovery of lost cargo.
After countless disasters, 40 men
constructed this welcoming safety beacon in 1836; it is as important today as ever with some 13,000 commercial vessels passing within 20 miles each year.
Take a breath of sea air, drama, history and nature when you visit Start Point Lighthouse, situated on one of the most exposed peninsulas of the south Devon coast.
Following an extensive refur- bishment and modernisation pro- gramme, Start Point Lighthouse is due to reopen to the public in May 2019 – come and see the changes! For opening dates
and in ther fur-
information visit startpoint
devon.co.uk/lighthouse or call the information line on 01803 771802 for monthly openings.
