St Edmund’s Festival returns with Curtis Stigers headlining
Globally-renowned pop and jazz artist Curtis Stigers will be the headline act at St Edmund’s Festival in Canterbury next month. Following sell-out dates at New York’s iconic Birdland and London’s Ronnie Scott’s, the US star will be performing at the event’s opening night on 26th June. Look out for next month’s INDEX for a chance to win tickets to the opening night. As part of the event on Friday 28th June, A Soulful Celebration brings leading saxophonist Derek Nash and vocalist Louise Clare Marshall, both successful solo artists and members of the Jools Holland Rhythm & Blues Band, with the incredible vocals of Noel McCalla, for an evening of music from
the soul greats such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. Open Water will perform in the festival marquee on Saturday 29th June, featuring Richard Rozze (acoustic guitars/ dobro/ mandolin/ vocals) and award-winning vocalist Joanne Doolan with the fabulous Jeff Alexander on guitar, banjo and vocals, and Alex Keen on double bass. CHARITY OF THE MONTH Hi Kent
Hi Kent is a charity that helps people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The organisation believes that people who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing should be provided with the information, assistive equipment and support required to maximise communication and enable them to live fulfilled lives socially and in employment. The organisation, which has a number of offi ces including a base within Canterbury, won a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in 2007.
Among its services is information on related conditions including tinnitus, with details of support groups meeting regularly within the area. At the charity’s resource centres in Canterbury and Maidstone, and at its online shop, it offers special TV listening systems, doorbells, smoke alarms, alarm clocks, telephones, special mobile phones and conversation aids. These items are a huge help and enable people with a hearing loss to carry
on their normal everyday lives at home and at work. • Visit
