Robert Hill was born in Liverpool on 24 June 1876, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 30 May 1900. Promoted Stoker in H.M.S. Jupiter on 22 August 1901, he transferred to H.M.S. Dryad on 25 September 1903, too late to see service during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland (the qualifying period for H.M.S. Dryad for this clasp was 17 June to 11 September 1902). He was promoted Stoker 1st Class on 1 July 1906, and was shore demobilised on 31 May 1912. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 1 June 1912, and served during the Great War in the destroyer H.M.S. Coquette from 9 August 1914. He died on 8 March 1915 when he accidentally drowned owing to his falling overboard from the Steam Launch 89 in Stangate Creek, on the River Medway, and is buried under a C.W.G.C. headstone in Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery, Kent.

John Hurrell was born in Callington, Cornwall, on 18 February 1877, and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on 13 July 1896. Advanced Stoker on 1 July 1897, whilst serving in H.M.S. Magnificent, he transferred to H.M.S. Harrier on 9 March 1901, and served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 9 to 30 November 1902, from 20 to 22 December 1902, and from 13 to 16 March 1903. Transferring to H.M.S. Sapphire on 8 February 1905, he was promoted Stoker 1st Class on 1 July 1906. He transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve on 2 August 1908, and served during the Great War as a Stoker 1st Class in H.M.S. Doris from 2 August 1914 to 15 January 1917, before being Shore Demobilised on 18 October 1919.

John Angus was born in Edinburgh on 3 December 1878, and attested for the Royal Marine Light Infantry at Edinburgh on 20 August 1896. He was posted to H.M.S. Highflyer on 16 May 1900, and served during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 26 November to 15 December 1902, from 27 February to 6 April 1903, and from 14 to 27 July 1903. He was discharged on 23 September 1905, upon being enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve, and was recommended by the Master of the S.S. Knight of the Thistle ‘for good service rendered when the ship was being abandoned, acting as signalman thereby enabling survivors to reach the S.S. Vulcan in safety, and also for saving the telescopic sights and binoculars.’
He saw further service with the Royal Marine Light Infantry during the Great War, and was awarded a Hurt Certificate on 14 May 1918. He was finally demobilised on 8 April 1919.

Joseph Clase was born in Brighton, Sussex, on 4 August 1866, and joined the Royal Navy as a Band Boy on 22 August 1881. Appointed Stoker 2nd Class in H.M.S. Iron Duke on 1 February 1887, he was promoted Stoker in the same ship on 1 August of that year, and transferred to H.M.S. Porpoise on 23 April 1903, serving in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 3 June to 17 August 1903. He was shore pensioned on 30 September 1904, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve on 1 October of that year. He served throughout the Great War in H.M.S. Vernon.

Christie John Nellthorp was born in Portsmouth on 1 April 1876 and joined the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Steward’s Boy on 15 January 1891. He was advanced Ship’s Steward on 20 January 1899, and was posted to H.M.S. Fox on 10 September 1901, and served in her during operations on and off the coast of Somaliland from 14 February to 17 April 1903; from 5 July to 14 September 1903; and from 8 March to 11 May 1904. He transferred to H.M.S. Albion on 26 February 1907, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 13 April 1909. Advanced Warrant Steward on 1 October 1915, he served during the Great War in the Battleship H.M.S. Glory from 23 October 1917 (also entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio). He was commissioned Paymaster Lieutenant on 1 November 1926, before being placed on the retired list in 1928, and was advanced Paymaster Lieutenant Commander on 1 November 1934.
