Hi Paul! Becky & I cruised through the Panama Canal in March on board the Oceania Marina. There is so much Amer- ican history associated with the Canal, but three facts caught my attention: 1. Senator John McCain was born at the US naval based in the Canal Zone. 2. President Dwight Eisenhower served in the Canal Zone before World War II. 3. America caused two of the four Canal closings: once briefly (5 minutes) to honor the passing of President Kennedy and again during the American invasion of Panama (1989).We transited the Canal in about 6 hours at an estimated toll of $500,000 or $400/passen- ger – faster and cheaper than going around Cape Horn. ~ Len & Becky Schwer of Sonoma County, CA.

Sam’ is modeled after Sam Wilson, a meatpacker from Troy, New York. During the War of 1812, the meat he shipped to the government was stamped ‘U.S. Beef.’ Soldiers began to call this beef Uncle Sam’s beef.

More beef is consumed on Memorial Day than any other day, with the 4th of July and Labor Day usually competing for 2nd place.
