many people as I can, who I know are really good,” Dorethy said. “There’s something to be learned from every experience. And I’m definitely still learning.” His subject matter is still painfully personal, yet he


says he’s trying to reach for the light. “Hopefully I’m growing as a songwriter,” he said.


“I’m trying to articulate different feelings, not just like the failed relationship and the world’s ending type of deal. “But that (pain) is part of life. It’s a way to get over


things,” Dorethy said of his songwriting. “It helps to gain a different perspective so you can start to see the lesson in the experience. And once you gain that you can begin to accept it and then see the beauty and joy in it all.”

friend, Lauren, appears from a back bedroom and fills Mr. President’s food bowl. Dorethy debuts many of his


songs to Lauren. “Oh yes, I love his songs and


being able to hear them first is special,” Lauren said, flashing an endearing smile. “If it doesn’t get past her it


doesn’t go any farther,” Dorethy said laughing. Lauren has yet to nix a song. After she leaves for work Dorethy continues, “Yeah, wrote that (his first love song)
