Vibrant color The variety of iris colors and siz-


es is varied to suit anyone’s taste, and there are an estimated 80,000 registered irises, according to the American Iris Society. Irises are classified into beard- ed, aril and beardless categories. Bearded irises range in height from under 8 inches for miniature dwarf irises, to more than 27 ½ inches for tall bearded irises. Typically, the tall bearded irises reach about 38- 40 inches tall, according to the iris society. Gallegos mostly grows the tall bearded irises, but also grows intermediate and standard dwarf irises.


In order to differentiate the


parts of the flower, the upper petals in tall bearded irises are called “standards” and the lower petals are called “falls.” Between these, it seems as if there is a never-ending spectrum of color. The tall bearded iris “Dangerous Mood” has denim blue standards and deep purplish-black falls. “Gay Parasol” has the lightest pale lav- ender standards and dark purple falls, while “Debby Rairdon” has canary yellow standards and creamy centers in the falls. “Im- mortality” has pure white petals. Dazzling pops of color can be
