But I’ll always keep in touch The musical education with Blue Dogwood served

Dorethy well when he embarked on his next odyssey at 17, a stint with Coyote Union, a folk-rock band of guys his own age. Coyote Union quickly gained a fol- lowing playing local and regional shows, including appearances at Harvest Festival, Wakarusa and the Red, White and Blue Festival in Mountain Home. The quartet also played a two-week tour in Europe. They even scored a showcase at South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. But like many bands, things gradually began to

splinter and Coyote Union disbanded a few years ago, leaving Dorethy searching for musical meaning. “It took about a year to get over it,” Dorethy said,

still petting Mr. President. “I was wondering if I should even keep playing music.” The nudge to get back in front of an audience came in the form of a call from Troy Farnam, another area musician of note. “Playing with Troy really helped me out,” Dorethy

said. “It forced me to take it back up again and figure myself out musically.” Dorethy played guitar, violin and harmonica on

Farnam’s recent album, Wind River (www.troyfar- nam.com). “Wes is a great musician, singer and songwriter,”

Farnam said. “But, more importantly, he’s a very kind and humble human being.” This life is a strange one You run a thousand miles to stand still Talk for hours just to find you’ll never quite Know how to say what you mean And I don’t know where we’re going But I’ll promise you one thing I’ll do my best to be what you need And always stay in touch – Touch Someone once wrote of Wes: “Wes has a quiet magnetism that is undeniable. His guitar; crystal- line, sparkling and clean, cuts through but never overpowers the vocal or the rest of the instrumenta- tion, just supports the moment and the song. His playing, which is so tasteful (never over playing) and nuanced, is a real breath of fresh air in the gunslinger guitar culture many seem to love. There is just some-

thing about a tasteful, restrained approach full of nuance, which communicates straight to the deep- est levels of one’s soul.” This quote by Wynton Marsalis applies to Wes:

‘The highest level of technique is nuance.’ ” Performing with Farnam helped give Dorethy the confidence to strike out on his own. He began play- ing solo acoustic shows a couple of years ago at Rapps Barren Brewing Company and other area ven- ues, quickly developing a loyal following. He started writing in earnest again, penning nearly 60 songs in that time, four of which he released digitally on the CD, We Only Burn So Long, which can also be found at Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Bandcamp, You Tube and Google Play. He’s also teamed up with another area musician

known for his exceptional and inspired guitar play- ing – Larry McGrath. The two play acoustic shows of Dorethy’s orignals and some of McGrath’s. McGrath has played with some exceptional mu-

sicians over his 50-year music career and says Do- rethy is as talented and gifted as anyone. “As important as his talent is, he is also one of the

nicest, kindest and honest individuals I’ve ever met,” said McGrath. “He doesn’t let ego or greed change his soul, as a lot of very talented people do. And when they go down that road they end up losing the magic and beauty of their talent. That’s not the
