From the Further Files… Going the Extra Mile in Denver

Our intrepid travel editor ascends to new heights in “The Mile High City” Ken Alan

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is Captain Guy Larson again from the flight deck. Our attendants will be making one more trip through the cabin prior to our landing in just a few minutes. The weather in Denver’s a sunny thirty-eight degrees, with prevailing boots and belt buckles, because - if you’re not aware of it, the rodeo’s in town!”

Captain Larson’s enthusiasm resounds within United Airlines Flight 323, as he banks over the finality of the Great Plains, breaking us through the cotton candy clouds. Peering out the window, I behold Denver’s skyline for the very first time. Like something out of a tour book, the city - with its confluence of modern glass and steel towers inter- spersed with several squat and sandstone colored early- 20th century structures - arises, hugging the border between the last vestiges of flat brown lands where they meet the white-topped base of The Rockies at its doorstep.

Like all major cities, Denver has an epicenter where excite- ment and energy seemingly spoke-out from – and here, it’s in Union Station.

Located in between the city’s convention center and famed Coors Field, and surrounded by scores of trendy restau- rants, bars and cafes, the station goes miles beyond a sim- ple transport hub. It plays hosts to internal eateries as well as being a dramatic space called The Great Hall, aka “Denver’s Living Room” – perfect for sitting and watching the world go by.

After hopping the light rail line from the airport, which tracks directly into Union Station, I emerge to see exactly what Captain Larson had noted earlier upon descent – thousands upon thousands of shiny belt buckles, pointy rhinestone encrusted boots, wide brimmed cowboy hats, handle bar mustaches and their respective owners all greeting me with pokey nods as they ranged down 17th Street. Indeed, the National Western Stock Show is in town!
