The Masterson Method by Judith Ley ITEC DIP MMCP

and went on to qualify as a certified practitioner. Jim’s book is entitled “Beyond Horse Massage” and that is a great description.

T

The Masterson Method® is an innovative form of equine massage, a unique, interactive method that uses the responses of the horse to your touch to find and release accumulated tension in key junctions of the body that most affect performance. The use of light touch and gentle movement in a relaxed state, and observation of a range of the horse's visual and palpable responses (blinks , yawns, changes in breathing are just a few) tell you what the horse's body is feeling. By using the correct techniques, and knowing the responses to look for, you are able to get a release of accumulated stress that affects mobility, comfort, attitude, training and performance. Muscular and structural balance, and natural alignment can be improved, and your horse can respond to training more comfortably. In contrast to most traditional modalities, it enables the horse to actively participate in the process of releasing tension. It is something you do with the horse, rather than to the horse. This participation and interaction are what makes the method fascinating for those who use it. In fact,

he Masterson Method® is an integrated, multi-modality method of equine massage.

I reproduce here some of the information written about this fascinating method of bodywork. More information can be found on the web page and Jim Masterson’s books and DVD’s. We are particularly lucky in this area as he comes to Oxfordshire in May and October to run introductory week ends and advanced courses.

The best way to discover the method I think is to see it in action. The first time I saw Jim I was amazed by the visible changes in the horse’s posture and behaviour. Although already qualified in Equine Sports Massage I was intrigued

if you do not allow the horse to participate, it does not work! Masterson uses a Touch and Response method really listening and observing the horse and staying under the bracing and guarding response. Movement is always done when the horse is in a relaxed state. You can stay under the radar of this “survival response” by applying pressure to the horse lightly enough and slowly enough to bypass this internal bracing or guarding response. If the horse braces they are met with a softening so there is nothing to brace against. The Masterson Method® enables you to access that part of the horse’s nervous system that will yield, or release tension. Subtle responses from the horse lead to release of tension. By learning to read and follow the horse’s responses to your touch, this bodywork becomes a fulfilling interactive process. You are able to create a trusting bond and win the cooperation of the horse.

I’ve found it a great method to use and found that the horses really respond to the touches and movements. When riders can really feel a difference in their horse it’s tremendously rewarding. “He is a different horse!” “He feels amazing” are one or two of the comments. Others have commented that the horses stride length and ability to lift the back has improved generally looser straighter. As with any bodywork/ physical therapy it is not an alternative to necessary veterinary diagnosis and attention and certified practitioners will always work within the Veterinary Surgeons Act.
