This issue CHN’s Clare Tobin chats to International Dressage Rider, Rob Waine

“A place where the first time rider or the seasoned competitor could both share their passion…horses”.

W

hen Rob started Rob Waine Dressage in 2013 he wanted to create a professional

environment that gave a luxury yet friendly feeling for both horse and rider. Six years later he has created a brand that focuses on the training of horse and rider whatever the level, whether it be through lessons, clinics, or Rob’s highly successful unaffiliated competition series. Rob is very lucky to be surrounded by a fantastic team of owners, sponsors and support crew who all enable him to compete in a sport he loves. He is sponsored by Equine Essentials Direct, Stuart Equine, Equilibrium products, Stübben and The Simple Equine. Rob currently has 3 competition rides. The 8 year old Sarkozy x Rotspoon x Lauries Crusador mare, Sanssouci has been with Rob since a 4 year old. She is working Advanced Medium at home and is expecting her first foal via embryo transfer by Foundation. Nazareno Vicon, an 8 year old Andalusian stallion is another horse that has been under Rob’s training since a 4 year old. Originally purchased by his owners, the Dent family for the Disney remake of Cinderella to star as Cinderella’s horse, they soon realised he was a star of his own. How right they were, in 2017 Rob and Nasa won the MCI European Championships in Paris. This year he will be out competing at Small Tour. Last but

certainly not least is Summer Dream. The 4 yr old Oldenburger mare by Foundation, Sandro Hit x De Niro was purchased by the Greenshields family from the Oldenburger Elite Auction. “It took 10 months to find Summer but she was well worth the wait. We aren’t in a rush to get her out competing at the moment, I prefer to give her a varied work routine to allow her body and mind to mature,” explained Rob. This seems to be the common theme in Rob’s stables. Each horse is treated as an individual and allowed the time they need to strengthen.

Rob how did you get started with horses as a career?

When I was 17 my Mum bought me a few riding lessons with International dressage rider, Sonia Webster. I was very lucky that she only lived around the corner from me. I would practice, practice, practice everything that she taught me in the lessons. When they ran out I began working for her at weekends in return for a lesson. A few months went by and I was deciding that A levels weren’t quite for me, so after lots of thought I dropped out of Sixth Form and went to become a full time apprentice for Sonia. She has a lot to answer for joked Rob.

Who is your inspiration?

My biggest inspiration has to be my trainer, Carl Hester. He is the most incredible person to train with. Everything is just so easy. He will say one tiny thing and the difference on the horse is just huge. Also he keeps on training up these

fantastic Grand Prix horses, one after another, just amazing.

How do you stay fit and do you have any other hobbies that don’t involve horses? I try to get to the gym a few times a week to help keep my core in top form. I love having dinner with friends, going to the movies and just the simple things like going on long walks with the dogs, finding a cute pub somewhere on the way.

Do you have any other pets or animals around the yard?

I do indeed! Top yard manager, team trainer and security; Rupert the Old English Sheepdog and my partner’s dog, Daisy a black Labrador. They are inseparable. I was once teaching a clinic for the local Pony club when I heard noises from each of the lorries parked up. Rupert and Daisy had gone from lorry to lorry scoffing up the sandwiches on the way! They looked very happy with themselves, all in a days work for the troublesome two!

Tell us about your new exciting relation- ship in Germany.

My partner, Ben Franklin and I have forged a great friendship with the Oldenburger Verband in Germany. Twice a year they run training courses, which last for about 4 days. We have attended now both the summer meeting, which focuses on everything you need to know about breeding your next dressage/jumping horse and their winter meeting, which is more about training the horses for
