AROUND TOWN

September & October May & June

The start of the summer saw the magnificent and monumental Man Engine towering over the South Yorkshire skyline as mining was brought to life in the shape of an 11.2 metre mechanical puppet, the largest ever constructed in Britain.

Looking back at our incredible mining heritage while glancing into the future of the two interlinking villages, the Man Engine wowed crowds at both Elsecar and Wentworth during a spectacular two-day celebration.

To commemorate 100 years since the end of the First World War, we remembered the fallen and featured the stories of those who came home. Poignant centenary events saw businesses,

organisations and individuals across the region pay memorable tributes to those involved and unite as a community to remember the great sacrifices that were made by so many.

July & August

We reflected on a very special year with St Bede’s Primary School as it celebrated the major milestone of its 150th anniversary.

Throughout the

year, children focused on history-based topics to discover how life had changed since the 19th century covering everything from fashion and transport to healthcare and new inventions. One of the biggest and

influential parts of the celebrations 2018 - Winners of the ‘ Schools’ Run a Mile a Day Cup’’

will this year see a shiny new sports arena and running track take pride of place at the front of the school.

November & December

The cauldron was officially brimming over when Grimm and Co’s magical apothecary scooped the prestigious title of Small Attraction of the Year in the Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards. The accolade marked

a spellbindingly successful year for the business which also won two gongs in the Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber awards, adding up to an impressive witch’s hat-trick for 2018.
