HEALTH & BEAUTY Here’s to a colourful New Year With Chris Moody of Moody Hair
The start of the new year is the perfect time to update your image and one of the most effective ways to do it is to change your hair colour.
This winter season brings a
variety of rich colour trends but, before taking the plunge, make sure you consider your skin level, skin tone and eye colour.
Begin by deciding on your
own skin level; dark, medium or light and choose a colour level that compliments. Use this as a guide but beware of any pitfalls; for example black hair on white skin works for Snow White but that’s about it. Next, assess your skin tone.
Paler skin tones work well with warmer colours and olive skin tones with cooler colours. Remember reds can be warm (copper/orange) or cool (damson/claret), golds can go either way and are a good universal and forgiving choice. Try to avoid having your hair the same colour as your skin, red rosy cheeks and red hair is not ideal. Match up your eye colour, brown
eyes stay with levels 1-5, blue eyes go with levels 6-10, green and hazel eyes are lucky you can move outside of these levels. Warmer colours always work
well in winter time and this season there’s a big shift toward multi tonal,
that is hair that has more than one tone, lighter or contrasting tones painted into the main base colour. Rich chocolate brown brings
depth and shine to hair and partnered with face-framing copper highlights makes a beautiful combination. For lighter skin tones, ash gold scattered with very pale lights compliments cooler skin and adds vibrancy to dark winter days. For very olive skin consider a beautiful rich, inky black tone to maximise shine. The silver/grey trend of 2018 is
still going strong but for winter we’re seeing a slightly darker version with more depth to the cool grey tone. For clever ways to keep
your colour at its best, consider root stretching which is a well- established trend that cuts down on that annoying monthly re-growth. A darker tone is painted onto the root and stretched out into the mid lengths to create a gentle ombre effect through the hair lengths.
As always, we recommend
consulting a professional hair colourist and make sure you get a skin sensitivity/allergy test first.
