BUSINESS
Building for the future
With an eye to the future, Mexborough Business Centre, based in the town’s former Grammar School, is building on its success and branching out to meet both community and corporate training needs in another prime location just around the corner.
Since establishing the business centre in 2015, businessman Peter Newman and his team have increased tenancy levels from 25 percent to 90 percent, attracting a diverse range of small businesses and supporting the local economy. Among the varied tenants are social housing professionals, an advice agency, beauty salons and a hypnotherapist to name just a few. Among the more recent additions is the Landuu Company, a life-enhancing business which aims to heal the mind, body and soul through retreats, workshops and one-to-one coaching. Tenants are often attracted to the centre by the business support, welcoming environment, extensive car parking and flexible terms – all important considerations for any small business or sole trader.
Boasting many authentic design features and with a commitment to restore the original Victorian building, the centre has also flourished as an appealing venue for events and activities. The accessible location, attractive setting, practical layout and eye-catching interior have drawn in visitors from all walks of lives for all kinds of functions. From public meetings, networking events and conferences to literary festivals, school reunions and craft fairs, Mexborough Business Centre is fast becoming the place to be whatever the occasion. Keen to expand the existing support on offer and begin another new chapter in the town of Mexborough, Peter bought the nearby Mexborough Resource and Training Centre last September which is equally well located in a central catchment area for Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster. The aim is to build on the business centre’s existing links to develop diverse training services and facilities at the new premises. These include a computer suite and wide-ranging courses to help meet demand, tap into growing employment sectors, address
skills shortages and improve job prospects.
As a prominent part of the local business scene, the Mexborough- based team have developed strong working relationships with various organisations including training provider Cidori which currently runs a number of courses that will play a key role at the Resource Centre. Cidori offers free training for people in receipt of certain benefits who want to gain a CSCS qualification - the leading skills certification scheme in the UK construction industry. It enables individuals to obtain a CSCS card which is required for jobs in the construction industry and offers wide-ranging opportunities and potential progression for job-hunters. The CSCS course will be a regular feature of training provision at the Mexborough Resource Centre along with a Rail Engineering and Construction Personal Safety course, also run by Cidori. This leads to a Level 2 railway engineering qualification and a potential career in the rail industry where an identified skills shortage exists. With the high-speed rail network expanding throughout the region, this kind of provision looks set to be a positive step for local people seeking new employment. Peter is also working alongside the Mexborough Community Partnership charity, which is already based at the Resource Centre, in a bid to attract more community and charity groups which are looking
for space and funding. Work is also under way to explore opportunities in the hope of securing funding that may enable the training centre to offer some subsidised training and increase accessibility yet further. With a vision and determination to echo the success of the business centre and transform the new building into a hub for training and education in the community, Mexborough Resource and Training Centre looks set to become a community hub for individuals, groups and businesses that are keen to make progress and move with the times. Peter is now appealing for training organisations in any sector that are interested in running courses in the South Yorkshire area to get in touch to help develop the training programme.
