OUT & ABOUT WILD AT HEART At one with nature A musical treat
Prepare to be transported to the chilly splendour of the Swiss Alps when Rossini’s rousing William Tell Overture opens a winter concert in the picturesque setting of Rotherham Minster.
Organised in aid of Rotherham Hospice, Rotherham Symphony Orchestra will be joined by local flautist Kathryn Hathaway to perform Carl Reinecke’s romantic Flute Concerto before the programme is rounded off with a performance of Dvorák’s
Symphony No.9, from the New World – perhaps best known for featuring in the famous 1970s Hovis television advert. Who can forget the young delivery boy clad in an apron and flat cap pushing his bicycle laden with a basket of freshly baked bread over the steep cobbles of Gold Hill in Shaftsbury?
The concert takes place at 4pm on Sunday, January 27th. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £5 for under 18s and are available via a link on the Orchestra’s Facebook page @RotherhamSymphony Orchestra
A group that connects people with nature to improve health and wellbeing is determined to do things differently. And with scrimshaw and whittling among the activities on offer, it certainly seems to be succeeding.
Wild at Heart is a community- based project that runs activities around wildlife and nature to support people aged over 50 or vulnerable or isolated adults. But standing out from the crowd isn’t the only goal; it also aims to bring real benefits to individuals by helping to improve their quality of life through social interaction and hands-on experiences that can significantly boost their mental health and change their outlook for the better. reconnecting with nature, enjoying new interests and forming friendships, the initiative has been hugely effective. It was recently awarded a second Big Lottery grant to continue and local health professionals are prescribing the sessions for patients as part of a ‘green prescribing’ initiative to help boost mental health. The Wild at Heart team have seen the project’s positive impact at first-hand and know it can be literally life-changing for some people, bringing fun and friendship into their lives and reigniting or triggering a love of nature. Wild at Heart is delivered by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and started in 2013. It has since gone from strength to strength, attracting growing
numbers of participants keen to socialise, try something new and generally explore the green spaces on their doorsteps.
The latest Lottery grant has secured Wild at Heart’s activities for the next three years and the group now meets on the first Tuesday of each month at Rotherham’s Clifton Park. Examples of the imaginative activities available include wild cooking, seasonal interest walks, nature photography, wildlife gardening and the aforementioned scrimshaw and whittling (or green woodwork) to name but a few. Participants are welcome to make their own suggestions and the Wild at Heart team work hard to accommodate people’s varied needs, interests and abilities. Booking is essential by phone or email and the sessions cost £3.50 although arrangements may be made to support people in financial difficulties.
