NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Reach those fitness goals in 2019

Every new year brings the promise of new beginnings and it’s inevitably the time when we think about making positive lifestyle changes.

But we also know, from past experience, that all our good intentions might not quite bear fruit and could easily be a distant memory by spring. So how do we improve our chances of success and make things happen in 2019?

Being realistic and determined are key to turning those positive plans into action so be honest with yourself from the off. Is it really true that you don’t have time to make any lifestyle changes? Could you perhaps find a regular half hour slot to squeeze in a spot of exercise or make some minor alterations to your usual activities throughout the week with fitness in mind?

The idea of going to the gym before or after work might seem a big ask initially but the rewards may well be worth it. You don’t have to work up a sweat to reap the benefits; try different equipment, discover your own level and set achievable targets so you can see and feel some progress.

The benefits you get from a brief spell of exercise, both mentally and physically, are proven to enhance mood and general well-being. And just think of the satisfaction you’ll feel compared to more sluggish workmates, friends or family when you’ve already accomplished something worthwhile before the day has barely started.

If the outdoors is more for you, how about incorporating a regular power walk into your daily routine

or weekly stroll? Simply accelerate your usual pace, using your arms to drive you forward and maintain your speed. It’s a simple technique that acts as an aerobic activity by increasing your heart rate and strengthening muscles without putting any pressure on joints.

Admire your surroundings along the way or pop on some headphones and enjoy some quality ‘me time’ with your favourite music or even an audio book. Whatever your preference, it’s a chance to be transported elsewhere for 20 minutes or so which will also help to relieve stress and tension.

Cycling is another great option which combines the chance to get out in the fresh air, spend time with family and increase your fitness and wellbeing. Take a traditional approach with a push bike or try out one of the new breed of electric bikes that take the strain out of uphill routes, make light work of headwinds and give you the freedom to explore further afield.

Of course many of us

genuinely do have busy lifestyles and often feel that time is a major barrier to making changes but activities such as cycling and power walking will actually save time by getting you from A to B that much faster.

So whatever your lifestyle goals might be this year, be inspired and give them a go. After all, where there’s a will, there’s usually a way.
