Best Marketing Award goes to Altura Heights Apartments Grand Opening

The Grand Opening for Altura Heights was held on November 8, 2017. It was a much-needed day of celebration for the Houston community which

was just beginning to pick up the pieces from the wrath of Harvey. And it followed by only days, the Houston Astros victory as Baseball’s World Series Champions! The ceremony was financed by DMA Development Company and Houston Area Urban Community Development Corporation. In addition to a smorgasbord of desserts, attendees received souvenir cups and tote bags.

Of the 124 apartment homes, 105 have rents structured to be affordable to persons with incomes at or below 60% of the Area Median Income for Harris County. These rents range from $347 for a 1-bedroom apartment to $1,047 for a 3-bedroom apartment. Nineteen units are offered at market- rate rents. Altura Heights is a mixed-income housing community, with 124 apartment homes.

Community assets within a 1-mile radius include public transportation, con- venience/gas stations, grocery stores, schools, churches, doctor and dental

offices, fitness facilities, and parks. Although Altura Heights would be occupied in stages, the first residents were scheduled to move in on Monday, August 28, 2017. Hurricane Harvey made landfall at Port Aransas on August 25th and torrential rains hit Houston shortly thereafter. Although Altura Heights was “high and dry”, the roads to the property were flooded and initial occupancy was delayed by nearly a month. The already long list of qualified applicants became longer as Houston residents lost their homes to Harvey and sought affordable housing.

Altura Heights was able to occupy all units by late December 2017. As of July 2018, Altura Heights remains 100% occupied, with an extensive waitlist for all affordable units. A future TALHFA Talk issue will feature the Altura Heights Grand Opening with additional information.
