NATIONAL KAOHSIUNG CENTRE FOR THE ARTS, TAIWAN MECANOO

Taiwan’s national arts centre, the National Kaohsiung Centre for the Arts (Weiwuying), has official opened. Incorporating a 2,236-seat Opera House, a 1,981-seat Concert Hall, a 1,210-seat Playhouse, a 434-seat Recital Hall and an Outdoor Theatre, the centre is a new cultural hub for East Asia. The venue “utilises its architecture and programme to combine artistic excellence with complete openness and accessibility,” said architects Mecanoo. The heart of Weiwuying is the vast, sinuous Banyan Plaza open to the public at all hours and home to a wide-ranging programme of participation. The single sweeping building covers a surface area of 35 acres (141,000 m2

) and is set in a 116-acre (470,000 m2 ) subtropical park, making it what’s thought to be the world’s largest performing arts centre under one roof.

THE AMBERLY, USA WOODS BAGOT

CUBE, THE NETHERLANDS KAAN ARCHITECTEN

building serves all faculties and is in constant use by 2,200 students and lecturers. CUBE is anchored to the landscape by paved pathways that guide users to its entrances on the south-side corners. In order to secure a free-flowing, open building and to avoid any sense of crowding, the heart of CUBE is a spacious indoor study plaza flanked by a transparent auditorium and two patios. On all sides, the building features a homogenous layout that leaves no closed-off facades, but exudes complete equality on all sides.

KAAN Architecten has designed CUBE, the new Education and Self Study Center at Tilburg University. This compact and ostensibly low structure blends into its surrounding green landscape and into the larger architectural ensemble of the Dutch educational campus. Located in the north-west corner of the campus, the 11,000 m2

Global architecture and design studio Woods Bagot has just opened its first North American tower. Located at the nexus of Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn, The Amberly is the all-new, highly anticipated 33-storey luxury rental tower. A striking addition to the Brooklyn skyline, The Amberly's design was inspired by the historic brownstones of Brooklyn and the warm terracotta facade was intelligently patterned to maximise light and views in the living and dining areas by giving way to floor-to-ceiling windows, while maintaining privacy within the bedrooms. Located at 120 Nassau Street, The Amberly will have 270 homes ranging from studios to three- bedroom residences, with select units offering private outdoor space.
