Patients face new bill for needle collections
PATIENTS livingwith chronic ill- ness are being hit with new bills to have their clinical waste re- moved. Maidstone Borough Council has
started levying charges for collect- ing used hypodermic needles or “sharps” directly fromhouseholds. Themove, which came into effect

this autumn, means patients will only get two free collections a year. If they needmore, itwill cost £5 per booking. Paul Collins, of Roundel Way,

Marden, was diagnosed with dia- betes 20 years ago and needs injec- tions to regulate his insulin. He told Downs Mail: “It’s not
like we can go elsewhere or take the needles for disposal ourselves – it’s illegal to transport clinical wastewithout a licence.” The 43-year-old IT professional
said the first he’d heard about the chargeswas through a friend, who also uses the service. He said: “You can’t just sign up for these collections. You need to
complete a clinical request form and provide a supporting letter from your GP, so the council has our names and contact details, yet I was told nothing. “I worry that, in order to save
money, some people will reduce the number of collections they have – but theremust be health implica-
tions around keeping used needles in the home, especially if there are children present.” DerekMortimer, chairman of the
council’s communities, housing and environment committee, said: “Due to growing demand, it was necessary to review how we were collecting our clinical waste; with the overall aimto ensure efficiency and keep the service available to all users. “We now offer two free collec-
tions each year and, for most peo- ple, we have evidence to suggest this is sufficient. The small number of people who received four or more collections each year were contacted by letter inAugust to ad- vise of the change to the service. “Larger sharp boxes can be pro-
vided on prescription and can be stored safely and without hazard. We are urging peoplewho feel they may need more than two collec- tions annually to obtain a bigger box, thereby keeping the service free to use.”
