Name: Martyn Jupp
Company: Veriserv
Job Title: CEO
What does your company do? We specialise in electrical inspection and testing, installation, maintenance and monitoring of fire alarms, security alarms and CCTV across the UK.
How did it all start? From my back bedroom in November 1991.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? Being the only company that act on behalf of the four main engineering insurers, Zurich, British Engineering Services (formally RSA), Allianz and Bureau Veritas. We are located in Burntwood but we service the whole of the UK with a team of 85 people.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Starting a fire and security division – and yes it has worked out. We now service a High Street food chain with 1620 outlets across the UK and 450 pubs, which has created 17 extra permanent positions in our business.
What keeps you awake at night? Cash flow.
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? In hindsight, to begin with, the sales arm of the business was very strong but the technical expertise to deliver the service wasn’t as effective as it should have been and I quickly recognised this and improved it to the point where I now feel we are the best given who we now work for.
What has surprised you most in your job?
The level of back office staff and processes required to support our engineers.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? If you think it’s possible, go with your gut feeling. Know your strengths but realise where you need support and employ experts in their field.
Which business do you most admire? McDonalds. They have honed processes and procedures to ensure the same quality at any store in the world.
What exciting projects is your business working on? Working with largest gold bullion dealer in the UK, and improving our IT systems for both the back office and for the field engineers to improve productivity and quality.
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? We’ve been members of the Chamber for many years now. Recently we have upgraded our membership to the 1813 Club as we feel this will bring us into contact with larger businesses in the Greater Birmingham region. I have been vice-president of the Chase Chamber for the past four years and have now been appointed as the president for the next two years. I find the Chamber is ‘the’ place to go for business networking and advice and look forward to serving the Chamber members while I am their president.
