A Modern Day Mystic’s Vision For Your Baby’s Sleep Sanctuary By Deirdre Hade


As new Moms and Dads


wait to welcome their babies into the world, there are so many exciting preparations to make. Of course, one of the most common worries during this period is, “Once the baby arrives, will I ever get any sleep?” The honest and short


answer is “probably not as much as you’re used to.” It’s a fact of life that babies need our care 24 hours a day. So rest up, but rest assured there are a few simple things you can do to create a serene sleep sanctuary so that your baby (and you) can sleep soundly. Every baby has an innate rhythmthat governswhen shewill


sleep. That rhythm probably won’t synch with your own at first, so it is important to establish sensory cues that will inform your baby when it’s time to sleep. Scientific research has shown that babies are most responsive to the touch and energy (frequency) of their primary caregivers and environment, so if you want your baby to sleep well, it’s important for you and your baby’s room to be as calming as possible. When I was a youngmother, these tipsmade a world of dif-


ference in helping me and my baby get the rest we needed. Crystals: Create a sacred sleeping space for your baby with


crystals. (Keep all of your crystals out of baby’s reach.) Crystals have been believed to have healing and calming properties for thousands of years. Every crystal is unique and emits a frequen- cy that interacts with the human electromagnetic energy system. What have you got to lose by trying it except another sleepless night? Plus, they’re beautiful, regardless of their healing proper- ties.


Rose Quartz – This healing crystal brings nurturing, a


sense of safety and serenity-the qualities of a mother’s love. Amethyst – The crystal of transformation, it clears nega-


tivity and disturbance fromthe environment.Amethyst promotes a sense of well-being and connection to our inner soul. Moon Stone – The bringer of sleep balances and harmo-


nizes thoughts, feelings and emotions and assists your baby’s growing nervous systemto find peace, connection and a sense of safety in her environment. Even in the most calm and peaceful households a new baby


can cause stress and anxiety. Having these crystals in your baby’s room and around your home will help ease the transition, creating a frequency of peace and calm for you and your baby. Aromatherapy: Scent is another way of calming your


baby’s nerves and settling the energy of any space. Lavender – Harmonizes the processing centers of your


baby’s brain by helping her to absorb the large amount of new information she is nowreceiving fromthe outerworld. Lavender calms and soothes, bringing your baby into a state of deep peace. Rose – Is the scent of unconditional love. Rose brings


serenity, contentment, and trust. Rose helps your baby let go so that she can fall asleep easily and effortlessly. Neroli – Takes away fear and balances your baby’s nervous


system by promoting an inner state of well-being. Neroli opens the pathways of your baby’s brain to release her own endorphins of pleasure, happiness and joy. (It does the same for you too!) You can find these oils at health food stores or online. I make my own baby calming spray by putting 4 drops


Lavender, 7 drops Rose, 5 drops Neroli into 3 oz of purified water. Use this to lightly spray the baby’s linens or scent her bathwater. You can spray some on your hand, hold it 6-10 inch- es from your baby’s face, and let her inhale the scent whenever she is fussy or ill at ease. For a gentle, calming massage oil, the ratio is 3 drops Lavender, 5 drops Rose, 4 drops Neroli in 3 oz. of Jojoba Oil.


You can use this to massage your baby after her bath, or you can massage her feet and belly with it if she is anxious or crying. Some babies and children might have sensitivity to one of


the aromatherapy oils. If you see any reaction, please stop right away.


Light: Any white or blue light activates your baby’s pineal


gland, sending your baby’s nervous system the message to stay awake. This is why light pollution is wreaking havoc on all of our sleep. The light in your baby’s room needs to be in the red, orange


or yellow spectrum, like the firelight we lived beside for thou- sands of years. This is the only color of light that doesn’t acti- vate your baby’s brain to stay awake and will help your baby stay asleep. I love Himalayan salt lamps. They have the perfect color


spectrum for sleeping. During the night, make sure your baby’s sleeping area is as dark as possible so she can establish a healthy circadian rhythm. (The circadian rhythm is the inner clock that triggers our bodies to sleep or to be awake. It is based on light.) Sound: Humming, singing, whispering. The most comfort-


ing sounds to your baby are the sounds she heard while in the womb. That would be your voice, her father’s voice, or the voic- es of those who were around you often while you were pregnant. I suggest you make a recording of your voice and/or the father’s voice and play it softly. This will help your baby to feel safe and know that you are nearby, ensuring a good night’s sleep. Singing to your baby is another wonderful way to help your


baby fall asleep. There are many devices that play ocean, wind andwhite noise sounds for sleeping, but you can’t beat the sound of your own voice when it comes to lulling your child. Meditating with Your Baby – A Mindfulness


Technique: Your baby is completely attuned to your feelings and emotions. Therefore, the most important thing you want to do to ensure your baby sleeps (thus helping you to get the sleep you need!) is to find a quiet, calm place within yourself before you put your baby to sleep. When your mind is filled with chatter and you’re going


through the list of all the things you haven’t done, or you’re wor- ried about a deadline at work, your baby picks up on this and joins you in your anxiety. The more anxious you are, the more difficulty your baby will have falling asleep. Here is a simple mindfulness technique for you to find the


calm within as you enter into your nap or bedtime ritual with your baby. 1. Gently watch your breath. 2. Imagine in your belly a pool of blue water. In the center


of this pool is a golden dolphin. 3. With every inhale and exhale of your breath, keep your


mind focused upon this pool of water with the golden dolphin in the center. 4. Continue the first three steps until you feel an inner sense


of peace. This simple and easy mindfulness technique is something


you can revisit anytime. You can do this while you’re giving your baby her bath, when you’re nursing or changing her dia- pers. If your thoughts return to your laundry list of chores, repeat this mindfulness technique until you feel peaceful and calm. Not only will this create a wonderful sleep environment,


you will also find yourself deeply connected and present with your baby. Your baby will be forever grateful for this nurturing connection and intimacy with you, and you’ll be grateful to get some sleep!
