Life is electrons in motion, thanks mom! By Luke Marshall

Mom gave us something that dad never could, mito-

chondria. The health of humanity rest on the shoulders of women and the mitochondria we receive from them. It has been estimated by mitochondrial researcher Dr. Doug Wallace that 85-90% of modern human disease is mito-

chondrial based. Eukaryotic cells actually have two sets of DNA, nuclear DNA andmitochondrial DNA. Our nuclear DNAcomes frommomand dad, while our mitochondrial DNA comes solely from mom. Nuclear DNA provides the code that is needed for synthesizing structural proteins and mitochondrial DNA pro- vides the code that is used for energy harvesting. Life is the interplay between structure and energy, it is energy that animates our anatomical protein structures. Mitochondria use an electron transport chain to pump protons, produce water, and to make ATP. The flow of electrons through our mitochondria provides life giving energy, while death is when electron flow is permanently halted. When the mitochondrial bioenergetic system starts to falter, we end up with anatomi- cal structures that fail to function optimally. Currently the biggest threat to our mitochondrial bioenergetic system is the

pervasive use of non native electromagnetic fields and artificial light, particu- larly artificial blue light at night. Mitochondria are environmental sensors, they have a dynamic two way relationship with our environmental context. It is each individuals unique environmental context thatmanifest their energetic status and epigenetic profile. The health of our mitochondria is largely dependent on prop- er circadian functioning, specifically the melanopsin/retinol couple. The ever growing use of artificially generated electromagnetic frequencies, such as blue light at night, creates circadian mismatches that have profoundly detrimental effects on our mitochondria. For example, melatonin is vital for mitochondrial health and this hormone is regulated via the melanopsin system. What can we do? Protect surface tissues such as eyes and skin from artifi-

cial light, especially blue light at night. Minimize exposure to non native elec- tromagnetic fields from WiFi, cell phones, and bluetooth devices. Get safe sun exposure and root your feet into mother nature. Mitochondria have been designed to see every sunrise and sunset. Photoreceptors such as melanopsin are dependent on the omega 3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). At the end of the day we cannot talk about women’s health without under-

standing how to optimize mitochondrial function. Mitochondria create about 90% of our cellular energy, this life giving feminine energy animates all human life.

tic health and enabling clients to achieve their optimal wellness goals. He grad- uated with honors from two Suny Morrisville programs - health promotion & human performance, and massage therapy. He then continued on to earn his master's degree in applied clinical nutrition from New York Chiropractic College. For over a decade, Luke has been working with clients at his holistic practice, Naturopathic Resources, where he provides clinical nutrition consulta- tions, soft tissue manipulation, therapeutic clay packs for old scar trauma inter- ference fields, and acupressure.
