Gold Success again for St. Edmund’s Girls School

St. Edmunds Girls School have been awarded the Gold School Games Kite Mark for the second year in succession. They were the only Secondary School in Wiltshire last year to achieve the award and have successfully achieved the status again in 2014-15.

offer a high quality curricular and extracurricular programme. We value the School Games and organise four School Games days every year. Our Leadership programme is particularly strong and we work closely with School Games Organiser Karen Moore to support many of the Level 2 festivals organised in Salisbury.”

Congratulations also goes to the following Schools in receiving their School Games Kitemarks

ASA Young Volunteer Programme

My name is Freya Wills and I am 15 years old. I have swum at a few different swimming clubs and only joined Bradford on Avon (my current club) last year.

This is how I found out about the Young Volunteer Programme.

More families in Wiltshire join SHINE Wiltshire this term… What is SHINE Wiltshire?

SHINE Wiltshire is a free healthy lifestyle programme for 7-11 year olds and their families. It is specially designed to support young people who are above a healthy weight. SHINE means Self Help, Independence, Nutrition and Exercise - these are all the things we can help you with!

What’s involved?

All of our programmes run for 10 weeks during school terms. Each week there are fun and practical sessions that aim to help you take simple steps to healthier eating and being more active. SHINE gives you the information, skills and confidence to make small lifestyle changes that can last a lifetime. Sessions are very informal and we focus on making them fun and interesting for everyone taking part, with a chance to share experiences, socialise and make new friends.

SHINE Wiltshire

Our programme takes place once a week after school for 2 hours. A parent or carer needs to attend with the child. SHINE delivers:

• Fun interactive sessions and games on how to eat a balanced and healthy

8 Wiltshire and Swindon Relay

diet, understanding food groups, portions, food labels and how to be more active together

• Family games and skills sessions • A focus on the whole family making healthy lifestyle changes

• Support and encouragement to increase confidence and self-esteem

• A chance to meet other parents and share experiences

What happens after SHINE?

After the 10 week programme we’ll offer you more support through our ‘Maintenance’ programme. This is a review session where you can ‘drop-in’ and take part in the fun physical activity sessions.

I’m interested…? How do I take part?

Programmes run throughout the year so please contact us to find out when the next one takes place. If you are unsure if you are above a healthy weight you can check on-line at www. nhs.uk/bmi, or contact us to discuss this. For more information, future dates and locations, to book a place or just to discuss the programme further, please call or email us.

I thought that the programme might be interesting to do and help me gain some skills that my school could not teach me, so I decided to apply.

I am still currently in the middle of completing the programme but so far it has been a very worthwhile and fulfilling experience.

I volunteer every Friday night, teaching 5 and 6 year olds to swim and I really enjoy it. Sometimes I will be in the water, sometimes on the side and I recently planned and took a session. I have also been to two courses, a basic officials course,

where I learnt about timekeeping, and the young aquatics organiser award, were I learnt how to organise an aquatic event. This course was in preparation for the aquatic event the other volunteers and I need to organise in order to complete the programme. I am not entirely sure what we will do for our event, but a fun mini gala for the younger swimmers might be good.

I think I have gained many things from the Young Volunteer Programme, including becoming more confident in working with people I don’t know as well as improving my teaching skills. I feel what I have learnt from the programme will be useful in my future.
