Kingdown School Students chosen for Talent Inspirational Programme

Lavington School students report on their experience in Manchester

We went to the Talent Inspiration Programme, in Manchester. We learnt how to become better athletes and how we could achieve our sporting. We were taught this through workshops which were each hosted by professional athletes such as Tim Prendergast, a partially blind Olympian runner, and Nicola Minichiello, who was part of the Great Britain Bobsleigh team. These mentors talked to us about their sporting lives and how they got to where they are. We also experienced what it was like to be an athlete at a Level 4 School Games event by going to the opening ceremony and watching the cycling races at the Manchester Velodrome.

Ella Daly and Tom Poolman

Between the 4 and 6 of September two inspirational Kingdown students were chosen as part of only 200 athletes to attend the Talent Inspiration Programme (TIP) in Manchester.

Daniella Whiting and Paige Fellows both competed in the Games. Kyra Brake also attended as a volunteer.

Ella Daly and Tom Poolman tell us their story on their TIP experience.

“It was an incredible experience where we met both inspirational Olympians and athletes of our age overcoming disabilities to participate and enjoy sport. During the three action packed days, we attempted new sports such as seated volleyball and indoor canoeing. Another great event in the programme included watching the cycling events in the velodrome. The determination of each cyclist and the respect that they had for the other

competitors was brilliant to watch. In groups we talked with Miriam Luke (Olympic Silver medallist in rowing) about performance improvement, Daniel Caines, British athlete in the 400 metres about goal setting and Rachael Mackenzie (Thai Boxing World Champion) about ‘Team You’. All of the athletes were very encouraging and ensured they talked to each student about our sport and how to improve. We found the experience very inspirational and now we will set out to achieve our own personal goals!”

Another highlight was the UK school games opening ceremony in which we got to see the UK’s and Brazil’s upcoming athletes.

We would like to thank the Kingdown PE Department for supporting us (and Mr Richardson for nominating us) in what was an amazing experience. We would recommend the TIP to anyone who gets the opportunity to take part.

Health Ambassador Conference

Adam Jones, Welsh International opened the Health Ambassadors conference on the 5th of March at Next Generation in Swindon. Primary Schools from across Swindon were invited. The Objective was to spread the concept of Health across Swindon.

The Pupils were encouraged to lead a healthy active lifestyle and were given workshops on how they could change their lives and become more active and healthier.

There were two Change4life stations set up for them to try and they were well received. Pupils were given a chance to try bodyweight circuit and leadership activities. Also workshops on healthy eating, social inclusion and school promotion ideas were well attended. Lots of happy children and smiling faces left the conference, full of ideas to take back to school.

School Gate Run is as simple as it sounds. It’s is an exercise session for mum’s and dad’s straight after the school drop off in the morning delivered by a local Run England Leader. It’s social, fun, engaging, low impact and enables parents to drop their child / children off at school, get in half an hour of exercise and then carry on with the rest of the day.

The health benefits of exercise are wide and varied. They affect and improve both psychological and physical wellbeing.
