Success for Lavington School in the School Games Girls Touch Rugby Competition

Avon Valley Cluster FUNdamentals Festival for KS1 pupils

This summer Avon Valley College hosted the annual Primary School Fundamental Festival for our surrounding Avon Valley Cluster Primary Schools.

We were delighted to have nearly 100 children take part in the day from several local schools, led by our Year 10 students, some helping as part of their core PE lesson and the rest taking the lead as part of their BTEC Sport course.

The activities ranged from Frisbees to Target Bolo, and from Crazy Catching to Crawl Nets and Tunnels.

The Year 10s led the KS1 boys and girls on a gloriously sunny day in activities to develop their basic

Mike Rose

Mike Rose took over the role of School Games Organiser based at Devizes School in July 2014 and has begun working with the various schools in the Mid Wiltshire School Sports Partnership (MWSSP).

He comes into the role with a great passion for all sports and wants to drive participation in The School Games competition and increase the numbers of young people taking part in sport across Wiltshire. He aims to make sport available to everyone and enjoyed by everyone, and will work towards including as many people as possible at all levels of The School Games which are considered to be the climax of the school sporting calendar.

Mike will be looking to build on last year’s success and will create new sporting and cultural competitions which will run within The School Games programme. He is currently busy organising Badminton and Boccia festivals for mid-November.

Mike would like to hear from any local clubs who are interested in creating school/club relationships and widening the opportunities offered to young people in the Mid Wilts area.

All who took part had a great time with the Year 10 pupils from Avon Valley College gaining valuable leadership experience needed for their course and the children having a go at some new and exciting activities to help them with their ever developing sporting skills.

Well done to Year 10 for leading the day.

Mid Wilts School Sports Partnership (MWSSP) held the Partnership’s inaugural Girl’s Touch Rugby competition at Devizes RFC in the spring term, where 60 girls from four schools ensured they played their best in a round robin competition.

Six teams; 2 from Sheldon School, 2 Lavington School, 1 from Devizes School and 1 from Corsham School, turned up in their boots raring to go for a 1.45pm kick off. After playing 5 matches each against one another, Lavington A team won GOLD after winning 4 out of 5 matches allowing just one try to be scored against them. Corsham took home SILVER winning 3 and drawing 2 games, Devizes were third winning 3 games followed closely behind by Lavington B team, Sheldon A and Sheldon B teams.

8 Young Sports leaders from Lavington refereed the matches with mentoring support from two rugby enthusiasts from PH Sports Coaching, giving the young leaders a great opportunity to put their coaching and officiating skills into practice.

Mentor Pete said; ‘The boys did a great job, not only were they refereeing, they also helped by coaching the girls and explaining some of the confusing rules to

them. They will make great officials in the future.’

The first Touch Rugby event held in the MWSSP area, was a great success with a great, buzzing, atmosphere. The girls showed some fantastic skills and talent throughout the afternoon. A big thank you to Devizes RFC for supporting and hosting our event.

Lavington School went on to play in the County Finals Level 3 of the School Games at Marlborough College on the 2nd July and they were very pleased with achieving a bronze medal on the day.
