The theme for the day really was ‘Fun in the Sun’. With the blue sky above and the sun shining 500 pupils from 36 Primary Schools and 800 students from 29 Secondary Schools had a great time competing at the 3rd annual Wiltshire School Games held at Marlborough College and Marlborough Leisure Centre on 2 July.

The opening ceremony saw colourful performances from Holt Primary School Dance troop, Bitham Brook's passionate rendition of the Hakka and Corsham Band's two songs were also well received by the crowd.

There were also 100 Young Sports Leaders involved giving up their time to support the event and play their part in officiating, marshalling and supporting the venue coordinators.

Sporting Champions Tom Reed who is a GB Judo player and Joe Hutchinson a GB Decathlete, enjoyed meeting the young

athletes and taking part in a variety of activities and were a real inspiration.

VIP Guest and Olympic 400m hurdles champion David Hemery CBE “I am so pleased to be part of a day such as this to celebrate School Sport and inspire and encourage young people to take part in sport and I always say if they improve their performance each time that is all that matters”

The Mayor’s of Marlborough Mrs Hannahford-Dobson and Louise Cary the Acting Head of Wiltshire Council Leisure Services were also amazed by the level of competition and pleased to see the young athletes enjoying taking part in all the different sports and activities.

Mayors blog ‘The 2nd of July saw me at Marlborough College for the Wiltshire School Games Sports Day to present some of the medals. Over a thousand children competed in every conceivable sport you could imagine. They did not all expect to win but, what I heard time and time again was that they were trying to achieve their “PB.” This, I was told, referred to their own ‘personal best.’ What a wonderful concept for young people to strive for’

Ra Cat the School Games Mascot was also a big hit with the crowds of children with lots of ‘Hi-5s’ and thumbs up for everyone. Despite the heat Ra Cat joined in with the Gymnastics,

Trampolining and many other sports. Don’t forget Ra Cat can come along to your School Sports events too!

Steve Neale, Operations Director from Wiltshire and Swindon Sport said “The day was not all about winning but about children taking part and achieving their own goals. The Games were also about instilling key values headlined for the event of Passion, Team Work, Respect, Self-Belief, Determination and Honesty.”

“We must say thank you to all the volunteers from a variety of National Governing Bodies of Sport for their time in organising their specific events and for helping the day run so smoothly and helping the young athletes to get the most out of the occasion. We really could not hold such a large prestigious event without their help.” Steve Boocock, WASP CEO.

“We are trying to build the School Games events each year and are keen to see more schools both Primary and Secondary to take part at the preliminary level 2 festivals so they can compete here at the level 3 county finals in the summer.” Alma Borthwick, School Games co-ordinator.
