Rainbow Shower
On 12th July 181 primary & secondary aged students with additional needs participated in the inaugral Rainbow Shower Event. These students represented 14 Wiltshire Schools. The event was hosted by Lavington School & organised by Rachel Bown the Youth Sport Trust PE Inclusion Lead for Wiltshire. The event was funded by the Youth Sport Trust, a charity which believes 'Sport Changes Lives'. Kate Grey (Paralympic swimmer) came along to support the event & represent the YST.
Sports Leaders from Lavington School & Fairfield Farm College ensured that everyone had a great day. There were three different rainbow themed activity areas which enabled all the participants to be fully included in what was a lot of messy fun! The students all received a crisp white t-shirt to begin the event- when the action finished it was rainbow coloured!
Rachel said "As the organiser I felt a bit over whelmed when I took a step back & watched the event. The field was a cloud of
DfE School Games Volunteer Apprentice scheme
The DfE School Games Volunteer Apprentice Scheme is an opportunity for some real grass roots development experience within School Sport. Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) has been coordinating the scheme throughout the county over the past 5 years. Every year, WASP recruits sports enthusiasts aged from 16 years up to join their team, and provide sporting opportunities to support the Wiltshire and Swindon School Games.
Below are some highlights from case studies that outlines some volunteers’ experience of the scheme:
‘Over the academic year, we volunteered at a number of events which included the Wiltshire and Swindon School Games in Marlborough. We played a supportive role to the WASP team. Jobs included taking photos, collecting score sheets and preparing prizes. We found it helpful to

volunteer at both the small-scale events and the larger county wide games, as it gave us more insight into the school games programme and volunteering as a whole. It was really enjoyable to be part of the Wiltshire School Games event in Marlborough; to see a year of hard work by the WASP team, schools, teachers and children come together was absolutely fantastic.
Overall, we think the scheme is a fantastic opportunity and we were very pleased to be involved with it. We learnt a lot from the experience about School sport. The experience on the programme, made us all feel so much more confident when assisting with events and competitions both at school games events and in our own clubs. We also had the opportunity to go on various coaching courses, and gain a certificate in first aid.”
During the 2016 / 17 intake, 12 Sports Enrichment Coordinators from Abbeyfield Secondary School signed up to the programme.
‘Abbeyfield Sports Enrichment Coordinators took part in a “Emergency First Response First Aid training course” run by Wiltshire and Swindon Sports. They received training from Rik Grover,
Sports Consultant WASP, who has been working with Mrs Pierce and the Sports Ambassadors and Sports Enrichment coordinators for over three years. All 12 participants are also enrolled on the DfE School Games volunteer programme coordinated by WASP’

colour with pupils of all different abilities participating alongside one another. The Sports Leaders were fully engaged, the teachers & teaching assistants were relaxed & above all it was truly inclusive!"
The feedback has been very very positive & we definitely hope to make this an annual event.
