Abbeyfield School pupil wins Trampolining Gold

Evan Minton competed in the 1st of 4 Trampolining National League qualifiers in the National indoor athletics arena in Cardiff, Representing Team Bath. He was in the 13-14 age group with 29 male competitors. He came first with very impressive scores to win the gold medal! This means that he has qualified for the November National League final at the Velodrome Olympic park in London.

Evan represented the South West team in the National Regional finals in the Birmingham International Arena and he got a silver medal, missing out by 0.035 of a point! however this meant he qualified for the British finals. This also gives him a place in the national finals at the velodrome in November. He also has a competition in Sheffield for the English championship finals. We wish him all the best!

Swindon Sports Forum Coordinator

Swindon Sports Forum have a new Coordinator who is looking to help develop sport for young people in Swindon. Matt Durber will be working directly with schools and clubs in Swindon to help develop links to provide more opportunities for young people to take part in a range of sports and activities.

"By creating relationships between schools and clubs, we hope to offer young people the chance to experience a wide variety of sports, and promote opportunities to continue playing outside of school".

If your school would be interested in developing more links with local clubs, get in touch with Matt at matt@wiltssport.org

Crossfit Hardenhuish

I tried Crossfit nearly 4 years ago and have been hooked ever since. Unlike when you train at a normal Gym, in a Crossfit gym everyone talks, will know your name, encourage you through your workout and want you to do well which means you see personal progress.

School PE has come a long way since i was at School and plays a huge role in the health of pupils but if you only remember days when your PE lessons were the classic Bleep Test, Cooper Run or Cross Country then 'Crossfit Hardenhuish' hopes to change your perception. Even those that don’t always enjoy team sports can benefit, as well as the wider school community.

I

have gained the Crossfit instructor qualification and had the school affiliated as “Crossfit Hardenhuish”.

aim to provide an after school club as well as running it as an

option in fitness classes. Initially the sessions will only be for pupils of Hardenhuish but if successful, it may be opened up to teenagers outside the school as well as our visiting primary pupils.

None of this would have been possible without the support of my school and WASP (Wiltshire and Swindon Sports Partnership) who provided financial backing. Crossfit Hardenhuish is now ready to launch England’s very first Crossfit in school and I can’t wait to see our pupils become involved.

Malmesbury Sports Exchange to Demark

This September 21 year 10 students went to Denmark for a Sports exchange. We each stayed with a host family from one of the pupils from the Tønder Gymnasium. With the trip being a Sports exchange the activities that we took part in were primarily focused on the Danish sport: handball.

Day 1 - was mostly travelling but after meeting the exchanges our families took each of the students away and participated in different activities.

Day 2 - we were given a tour of the town, Tønder, by some pupils from the Danish school, learning bits about its history and heritage as well as some Danish! Half way through the day all of the Malmesbury students went to the leisure centre to play indoor hockey. This was fun and helped regain our competitive sides before handball training the next day.

I

Day 3 - handball training took place all day and allowed us to transfer skills that we had already gained from sports like rugby and netball to this new sport, handball.

Wiltshire and Swindon Relay 13

Day 4 - we travelled to Germany on the Saturday and watched one of the top handball teams in the world (Paris Saint-Germain) vs the local and top 10 team in the world (SG Flensburg-Handewitt). This not only allowed us to get a better perspective of the game but also to see how big a sport handball is in other countries.

Overall, the aim of the trip was to develop our sports skills and bring back what we learnt to Malmesbury School to possibly start a handball club and get some fixtures up and running to allow students different sporting opportunities is they would like to give it a go. We look forward to welcoming our exchange partners to Malmesbury in May to introduce new activities to them.
