HIIT training at Bulford
St Leonard's Primary School Pupils and staff from Bulford St Leonard’s primary school, part of Salisbury Plain Academies, took part in an online High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workout recently.
The workout was a country wide initiative by Body Coach Joe Wicks. His aim was to try to get one million school pupils exercising in one week.
“As a school, we wanted to inspire children to get involved in fitness by seeing how easy and fun it can be to be active through simple exercises,” said Jemma Dicks, PE subject leader
All 247 children at Bulford St Leonard’s, from Nursery children all the way up to Year Six, completed the 20 minute workout during the week which also included a short warm up, meaning each session was around 30 minutes long. Year 6 pupil, Kai Holmes said: "OK it really hurts but I feel so much better and it was really fun!" The children were exercising in all of the classrooms and hall space across the school and were very excited to take part in a huge live event.“This was a very exciting activity for the pupils to participate in
Wiltshire and Swindon Relay 11
and it has promoted the importance of exercise and keeping fit in a fun way. As a school, we hope it has encouraged children to participate in fitness and workouts at home too,” said Jemma Dicks.

During the day the students looked at the qualities needed to be a good leader, led a warm up, they designed and led a fundamental session, learnt Makaton, discussed the different roles of leaders and planned and delivered a game to their peers. The students will now be invited to help lead at the different primary sports festival organised as part of the School Games.

Pupils and staff from Avon Valley College, part of Salisbury Plain Academies, took part in national fitness day recently.
Everyone tried out a different exercise ranging from Zumba, spinning, circuits, boot camp and gym workouts. The sessions were led by the physical education staff and the gym manager of Lifestyle Fitness which is on the college site. The activities aimed to highlight the importance of physical activity and to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Year 9 student, Owen Thomas said: “I enjoyed my session it worked my whole body and made me feel good afterwards.
PE teacher, Dan Burton, who organised the day said: “It was great to see so many students getting active and trying something new, hopefully we have encouraged the young people to get more active and enjoy exercise.”
Due to popular demand the new activities will be offered as extra-curricular clubs and the P.E. Department will continue to inspire the whole school to improve their health and fitness.
“This event supports the school's commitment to promoting lifelong fitness,” said PE teacher, Collette Harries. “Other initiatives next term include a fitness club on the school campus for primary school children, and a vast range of physical activities offered to pupils attending Avon Valley College, both in timetabled and after school clubs.”
