DESIGNER: What is your ideal kitchen layout and appliance nurtin r the he SLACK: ’m a private hef and  wor in several lients’ homes so  feel lie ’ve seen every possile onfigration nder the sn. ’ve onlded that  don’t mind eatly where it all goes so long as  have everything to hand. f yo have to ross the room or negotiate an island to get from the ho to the nife draw then that’s annoying. As long as  an reah the fridge from the ho and the dishwasher from the sin then ’m happy.


DESIGNER: What kitchen appliance(s) could you never be ithut in yur n he SLACK: A good set of sales. Almost everything an e done y hand so if  really had to  old live withot my food proessor and my mier.  now it sonds a it rs eaton, t arate sales are the fondation of any good ithen. h, and my temperatre proe. Cheapest gadget  own, t easily the most freently sed.


DESIGNER: Which professional appliances and techniques do you feel should (or will!) make the trnsitin t the he SLACK:  really hope it isn’t sos vide! ’m not a ig fan. ’d ite lie to see more warming draws in home ithens. ’m seeing them more and more in lients’ homes and it’s sh a oy to have perfetly warmed plates. ls, they’re great for proving read.


DESIGNER: Gas or indutin h nd hy SLACK: ithot hesitation, indtion. t’s more effiient, safer, leaner and st as responsive as gas.


DESIGNER: What are your preferred materials in the kitchen at home inudin r rts rin nd esehere SLACK:  an’t stand wortops that are high maintenane: wood that an’t get wet, or stone that stains if lemon tohes it. t’s maddening when it loos great t doesn’t fntion as a ithen.  lie something strdy and heatproof for a wor srfae. That said, for a home ithen ’m a fan of natre materials so my own ithen is a wood wortop and Cotswold stone walls.  have a la tiled oor whih was a hge mistae  it gets so hot in the smmer and it shows p every spe of dirt.


DESIGNER: What would you most like to change about your current he ithen SLACK: Apart from the la oor, ’d swith ot my gas ho for indtion. hen we renovated the hose we had gas rn in so  was all eited


for a gas ho having srvived with an atroios halogen thing. t if ’d thoght aot it more, ’d have gone for indtion. Also, ’d love to have a seond sin so  an wash and prep all my mddy homegrown veg when it’s st ome ot of the allotment withot getting the rest of the ithen in a mess.


DESIGNER: What advice would you give kitchen designers looking to create residential spaces that work as effectively s  ressin ithen SLACK: ever nderestimate how mh sale wor srfae is needed! So many ithens  oo in when ’m woring as a private hef in residential homes have lots of wortop spae t only really one one whih an e sed for hopping, miing et.  have two in mine  one net to the ho for hopping et, and one at the other side of the ithen net to the mier for pastry and nonho ooing.
