Foraging Is Fun, Part 2 By Gloria A. Brown

The weather has certainly been warm,

hasn’t it? But don’t let it deter you from get- ting outside and walking through the woods and forests to practice what you’ve learned fromthe resourcesmentioned inmy previous article. Take a buddy with you. Show them what you’ve learned. Don’t forget to take your reference materials with you and a lit- tle backpack that contains items to use when you spot an herb you’d like to get to know better. The backpack should contain a camera and a journal. Did you know that there are apps that will help you identify plants? Download one and try it out. Have some small paper bags to take your specimen(s) home, scissors or a small paring knife, a magnifying glass (for closer inspection), and some bottled water for you or to wash off a root. Use the reference book to correctly identify the plant.

If you find one you’d like to know better or one you just find pretty, sit and spend some time with it. Close your eyes and see if it speaks to you. Look at the leaves (top and bottom and along the sides), the flowers (look at the stamen and pistils) and stem structure. Are there similar plants in the area? Do they vary slightly? How much? Is there a smell from the flowers, or from the leaf when you rub it with your fingers? Remember its location and visit it during another season. How has it changed? Note all of these items in your journal. There are a few things you must be mindful of if

you’re foraging in the wild. Know the right season to har- vest the particular part of the plant that you want, flower vs leaf vs root. If you’d like to take a specimen home make sure that the plant is not endangered or poisonous. Pay close attention to plants on the “At Risk” list. These plants are rare and we don’t want to deplete their popula- tion. When in doubt, leave it. Don’t harvest plants along- side the highways or roadways, near electrical towers, railroads and such. The plants may be contaminated or have been sprayed with herbicides. Look for lots of plants of the same family. But don’t just pick in one area, pick from several spots. Once you’ve decided to pick it, ask permission of the plants, leave a little token of love or a prayer of thanks for their healing medicines. Hope these tips have been helpful. Seems like a lot to

learn doesn’t it? Just remember practice makes you better. Or is that perfect? Good luck and happy exploring.
