7 Sugar Substitutes to Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth We know that sugar in large quantities isn’t good for us. It can be hard to find ways to replace that sweet taste in the things you make and the foods you eat. Find out seven alternatives you can use to replace table sugar. Date Sugar and Paste Date sugar is made from dehydrated dates that have been ground up. It’s similar in con- sistency to brown sugar and can be used in many of the same settings. If you’re using date sugar, you may need less of it than the usual amount of table sugar because it’s slightly sweeter. The sugar may also contain trace amounts of someminerals. Date paste is naturally high in fiber and has a caramel sweetness and is full of potassium, iron, and B vitamins. Coconut Palm Sugar Coconut palm sugar can be used in a similar way to regular sugar and can be used to replace sugar in most recipes. It contains the same number of calories as regular table sugar but also contains a number of minerals and is a possible source of some vitamins. Liquid Stevia Stevia is native to South America. It has no calories andmay lack some of the side effects of artificial sweeteners. It can be used in all situations where sugar is normally used, such as your morning tea, over your cereal, or in smoothies. Maple Syrup Maple syrup can add flavor in addition to sweetness and has fewer calories per tea- spoon than table sugar. You can use it to sweeten a dessert or your morning bowl of yogurt or oatmea BlackstrapMolasses Blackstrap molasses has made a comeback because it’s loaded with iron and calciumand several other trace minerals. Its consistency and flavor make it ideal for sweetening ener- gy bars or other gooey snacks for those with active lifestyles because of its thick texture.
Monk Fruit Sweetener Monk fruit sweetener is made from monk fruit, as the name suggests. It has zero calo- ries, a low glycemic index, and can stimulate insulin secretion. Traditionally, it has been used in teas but you can also use it in sauces, dressings, and beverages. You can also bake with it, but it's 300 times sweeter than sugar so you only need to use a tiny bit. HONEY Honey may contain small amounts of antiox- idants potassium, phosphorus, vitamin B6, riboflavin and niacin. While these occur at low levels, they can help boost your overall daily levels of these vitamins and minerals. One tablespoon of raw honey has 64 calories and the same glycemic load as a banana. 5 Ways to Use Manuka Honey Manuka honey has been garnering a lot of attention lately, thanks to its many uses and benefits. Derived from the nectar of the Manuka tree in New Zealand, this honey is dark in color, more viscous than others, and has been said to have an earthy and slightly bitter flavor. Wondering how you can incor- porate Manuka honey into your daily rou- tine? Here are five of our favorite methods. Antibacterial Properties While honey of all kinds is said to have antibacterial properties, Manuka honey may provide amore concentrated dose, thanks to a compound known as methylglyoxal. If you have a mouth ulcer, burn, cut, or scrape, Manuka honey can help heal these wounds and provide relief by destroying the bacteria. Just one caveat: all Manuka honey is not made the same. Make sure to look for the UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) label to make sure you are purchasing genuine Manuka honey with the correct antibacterial strength. Some studies have shown thatManuka honey also reduces rates of bacterial resistance, meaning that for some bacterial infections, it may be safer to use Manuka honey over tra- ditional antibiotics.
Sore Throat Soother If you are suffering from a sore throat, Manuka honey can come to the rescue. Thanks to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, this honey can help reduce inflammation and swelling, and kill the bacteria that is causing the pain. You can try eating a spoon of it on its own or you can blend it into a cup of warmwater to enjoy the benefits. In terms of oral health, a recent study suggested that Manuka honey may be effective at preventing gingivitis (gum infec- tion and inflammation) and other tooth and gum infections by reducing plaque. It also may be quite promising for helping to reduce esophagitis, the painful inflammation of the esophagus that chemotherapy patients can develop. All-Natural Sweetener If you are used to relying on sugar packets to sweeten your coffee or tea, you may enjoy switching to Manuka honey instead. Rich in vitamins and nutrients, swapping out artifi- cial sugars or refined sugars for this ingredi- ent can help you along your health journey. You can also enjoy the honey on a slice of toast, ormixed in with yourmorning granola. Digestive Health If you are suffering from irritable bowel syn- drome or gastritis, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to support claims that Manuka honeymay provide soothing relief. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, honey can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the stomach and may even aid in digestion too. Improves Complexion Manuka honey has many uses when it comes to the world of skincare. You can try making a mask, using it as a spot treatment for acne scars and dark spots, or you can even mix it with sugar to create a full body exfoliator. Since honey has antibacterial properties, it may potentially heal existing acne as well. You can even get creative and crush up aspirin tablets to mix with honey to create a paste for trouble spots.
