Selling like hot cakes! ‘We hold a cake sale in the school hall three times a year, straight after school. We begin organising each event about six weeks in advance, and donation requests are made around four weeks before via Facebook, school newsletters and in class. We usually have a theme and suggest ideas to encourage people to bake. We accept shop-bought donations from those who don’t want to bake, as long as the cakes are nut-free and don’t contain fresh cream. We also request donations from bakeries and cake shops, and we keep up momentum by posting regular updates and requests for donations. Luckily, we have a core group of parents who love baking and always make cupcakes relating to the theme. On the day, donations are collected throughout the

morning. Cakes are then priced for the stall or packed into pre-ordered boxes by volunteers. The sale begins at the end of the day and cakes are priced at 50p-£1 each. All volunteers running the stall wear gloves and aprons when handling any cakes. The sale gets very busy so the queue for entry is managed to keep it orderly. We also run a cake tombola alongside the sale to boost profi ts. The sales are really quick events, usually lasting around 45 minutes. For the pre-ordered boxes we charge £4 for six

cupcakes. We promote this via our Facebook page, where parents can respond with an order request. A pre-order list is collated in the run up to the sale, and boxes are packed and named ready for collection, with payment being made on the day. It’s great for parents who want to buy cakes while avoiding the crowds. They collect and purchase the pre-ordered boxes under the canopy in the school playground. Overall, our costs per sale are approximately £40

for the cake boxes, paper bags and cake labels. From this, we make £600-£700 at each cake sale!’ Mira Lad, Chair, Friends of Cannon Lane Primary School, Pinner, Middlesex (810 pupils)
