GFS: MUSIC-HISTORY

MUSIC O

n Wednesday 11 July at 6:30pm, GFS hosted its annual Summer Concert. The event was a huge

success and performers ranged from Year 7 to Year 11 students. The concert featured two songs performed by the newly formed GFS Elite Choir, directed by singer Natalie Christian-John. They performed Human by Rag ‘n’ Boneman and This is Me from the Greatest Showman.

There were debut performances from Year 7 students Krisha Bc and Alexander Liberato. Year 11 students, Amber Walker and Giacomo Bognola, returned to perform one last time, with Giacomo performing a beautiful rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne

in B Minor and Amber singing A Million Dreams by Lady Gaga. The cast of Matilda also returned to the stage to perform a medley of songs from the show.

The evening was hosted by student comperes and aided by student musical directors Archie Wilson and Emily Guy, who helped with rehearsals on the day and technology on the night.

The newly formed PSA served refreshments just before the event and a professional photographer visited to take photos of all the performers, which are available to purchase via the school. It was a wonderful way to end the school year and we look forward to welcoming performers to the stage at our next event - the Christmas Concert.

Thank you to all the performers: GFS Elite Choir, Fatima Ghanim, Jessica Allart, Lucy Hickey, Jade Bliss, Giacomo Bognola, Racheal Lucas, Gonul Ali, Gozde Ali, Romy Sokolow, Krisha Bc, Alex Liberato, Amber Walker and Oliver Kieu.

ELITE CHOIR T

GFS

his term has seen the formation of the GFS Elite Choir.

The choir is an invite-only group of around 30 musicians ranging from Years 7 to 11, formed of the best musicians across the school. They are directed by professional vocal coach and singer, Natalie Christian-John. The choir rehearse once a week and had their debut performance at the annual Summer Concert on Wednesday 11 July.

For many of the students, it is the first time they have been part of a choir and they are enjoying singing with their peers, mixing with students from other year groups, and getting training from a professional vocalist.

This term the choir have been working on Human by Rag ‘n’ Boneman, and This is Me from the film The Greatest Showman.

Spotlight - Peripatetic Music Staff I

n the Music department we employ a team of peripatetic staff who teach instrumental lessons.

Michael Searle currently teachers piano and singing at the school. Since having joined earlier this year, the uptake of piano students have increased dramatically and students are thoroughly enjoying their lessons. Mike studied Music at Leeds University and since then has been teaching individual piano lessons, small group lessons, directing choirs and ensembles.

Comments from some of the students in the choir are below:

“I think it’s really fun. I enjoy the singing and Miss CJ is really nice.” David Constantin Year 7

“I like Miss CJ and I feel that choir brings us all together.” Gonul Ali Year 7
