DRAMA TRIP O

Matilda The Musical

n 6 June the Drama department took the Matilda cast to the Cambridge Theatre in London’s

West End to see the actual production of Matilda The Musical.

The adventure started when the students were taken to see the world famous Pineapple Dance Studios where the auditions for Matilda The Musical often take place, as well as walking passed the stage door of the Cambridge Theatre.

Finally the students entered the amazing theatre to see the production performed. They were all wowed by the amazing set, stage lighting and sound design and were very impressed that our very own Mr Facey had designed our school set to look very similar!

The students particularly enjoyed watching and learning from the actors on stage who mirrored their own part in the production. It was an extremely inspiring experience and made the cast hugely excited for their own performance of the musical.

The West End cast heard about the GFS production of Matilda and Miss Honey sent a video message of good luck to our cast and crew – who knows in the future some of our GFS students may grace the West End stage! If you can learn anything from Matilda, it is that anything is possible!

rison Me! No Way! is a national educational charity that aims to raise awareness

amongst young people in relation to the causes, consequences and penalties associated with crime. Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 had the opportunity to work with a number of professionals from police, fire, prison and community service backgrounds across a variety of hands on and engaging activities.

“I learned that you need to think before you act because actions always cause consequences.” – Shanilah

“The day provided me with a number of experiences that will prevent me from making bad choices in my future.” – Zen

One workshop allowed students to act in the role of a judge in the UK justice system, where they were challenged to deliver outcomes of real-life cases as well as engage with a reformed criminal to consider how the choices made at a young age can impact on an individual’s future.

“It was informative – we explored in depth how the court system works.” – Stanley

“They gave us the opportunity to ask any question we had about prison. I asked whether it was true that they have computer consoles in prison. They don’t!” – Adam

“They showed us what it would be like to lose your freedom.” – Emmanuel

“They taught us how going to prison can ruin so many lives, including your own family and loved ones.” - Lennon

Students also engaged with role-play activities with ex-prison officers to explore how some behaviours may be deemed as anti-social and also had the chance to experience what it was like to be locked in a real-life prison cell!

“I was shocked that you only get a shower once a week. They told us stories that mean I will never want to go there!” – Jude

Our students represented our school fantastically throughout the day, acting as perfect ambassadors for GFS, despite facing some sombre and at times harrowing material. The PMNW staff were highly impressed with their mature conduct and well considered questioning. This was the first time PMNW have facilitated events at GFS and the students unanimously welcome their speedy return.
