GFS: SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES Science

STEM AWARD FOR GRACE

C SCIENCE WEEK VISIT FROM EGLINTON PRIMARY A

s part of British Science week the GFS Science department welcomed 60 year 5 students from Eglinton Primary School for a science

showcase. GFS students involved with the science club enrichment programme had prepared and practiced a series of experiments to demonstrate and teach the primary children. The experiments included ‘Troll Hair Chromatography’, ‘Plastic Milk’, ‘Astro-Nappy’ and flame tests. The students also had an opportunity to make some plant based fabric dyes and use them to create some dyed textiles.

The children from Eglinton thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate in some exciting secondary school science and this was only possible due the hard work and leadership demonstrated by the science club students. Our GFS students were complimented on setting such a good example to the younger children and the primary teachers were impressed by their ability give clear instructions and lead the experiment workshops with very little teacher input.

The primary school children got to take away mementos of their day in the form of their chromatography trolls and their tie-dye creations.

YEAR 11 WOOLWICH POLY SCIENCE VISIT O

n Thursday 22 March, Woolwich Poly Sixth Form delivered grade 7-9 revision lessons for our top

set Year 11 Science students.

The session consisted of a 1 hour Chemistry revision lesson

followed by a 1 hour Biology lesson with their A Level teachers.

This excellent opportunity allowed all students to be stretched and challenged. It bridged a gap to A Level and gave a taster to their future 6th

Form lessons.

ongratulations to Grace Stafford for winning the Health category at the TeenTech awards this term.

Grace was up against some tough competition, as the event is mostly populated by independent and grammar school students. However, she overcame this challenge and presented her extremely innovative idea:

Grace developed a device, synchronised with an app, which reminds those diagnosed with dementia to complete daily tasks. The judges felt that Grace had conducted her research diligently and used the feedback of others to refine the design enough for it to be immediately ready for market.

This is a tremendous success for the school and testament to the hard work of STEM students.

Grace acknowledged herself that the STEM enrichment, led by Ms Oldbury, has allowed her to understand the relationship between the sciences and has inspired her to explore further the benefits that technological innovations can have on the social care sector.
