CHARLOTTE

SCOTT

DRAMA A

MATILDA O

n the 20 and 21June the GFS community were treated to an amazing theatrical production of Matilda The Musical.

The Drama enrichment students had participated in acting workshops based on Matilda leading up to the auditions which took place in February. The cast then worked tirelessly over the preceding four months showing commitment, dedication and exceptional talent.

Working with director Thomas Sutcliffe, who has a wealth of stage and musical theatre experience, the students really did put on an incredible show which was extremely professional. Director Mr Sutcliffe said ‘It has been a pleasure directing this year’s school production of Matilda. It is a challenging piece, with equal focus on singing, dancing and acting. Learning to combine these three disciplines has been incredibly rewarding for the students and they have learnt a great deal about the workings of a professional musical theatre company. Our trip to Matilda in the West End (right) was a huge success and inspired the cast to further express themselves and explore work outside of their comfort zone’.

Well done to all students and staff involved. We hope to see lots of you auditioning for next year’s school musical!

A GFS Production...

s part of last term’s ‘Drop Down Day’ experience, the GFS cast of Matilda were incredibly lucky

to be given a Masterclass by West End performer, Charlotte Scott. Not only has Charlotte appeared as Miss Honey in the West End production of Matilda, she has a string of other credits to her name, including; Wicked, Singing in the Rain, Cats, Fame, The Rocky Horror Show, Footloose and many more. After training in dance from a young age, she attended the prestigious Mountview Academy of Performing Arts, graduating with a BA (hons) in Musical Theatre. As well as performing, Charlotte leads West End Workshops all over the world, specialising in Musical Theatre.

Charlotte took the students through a variety of exercises using her own experiences of being in Matilda to guide them. They were able to learn dances from the show, work on sections of singing and perform scenes. The cast were also given the opportunity to ask Charlotte questions about her time spent in the West End, learning a great deal about what it’s like to be a professional actor. Her stories ranged from costume disasters, to working with top directors such as Trevor Nunn!
