Apprenticeships - the new way to train your staff

We are all familiar with apprenticeships as one of the best ways to introduce employees to the more traditional industries of construction, engineering or catering; however, they are also a great way to train staff in everything from business administration to social care. In fact - to paraphrase Apple’s 2009 ‘App Store’ campaign - if you can think of a sector need, then ‘there’s an app-renticeship for that’.

Taking on a new customer services employee? There’s an apprenticeship for that.

Promoting a manager who needs to brush up on their leadership skills? There’s an apprenticeship for that.

Going digital with your marketing and need a tech-savvy blogger to see you through the social media maze? There’s an apprenticeship for that too.

HELPING TO STOP ABUSE

Firms can sometimes struggle in helping staff members who have experienced sexual abuse. Managers may not feel they have the appropriate knowledge, training or ability to provide the required support for people who are dealing with the resulting emotional scars.

L&D Training provides this specialised training to support people’s mental health and wellbeing in the workplace.

We are a training provider in the South West who dedicate our time to educating, helping and training individuals on topics which are often difficult to talk.

Please have a look at our website landdtraining.co.uk for the training we offer.

20 Chamber Profile July/August 2018

The number of apprenticeship standards will soon increase to over 2,000 and will cover all levels up to degree- equivalent ‘higher apprenticeships’. This means greater training possibilities for both employer and employee, particularly when you consider the funding incentives available. Businesses are able to access funding

‘Businesses are able to access

funding from the Government to

cover 90% of the apprenticeship training costs’

from the Government to cover 90% of the apprenticeship training costs and, if the business employs 50 or fewer staff and the apprentice is aged 16-18, 100% of the training costs are covered. An apprenticeship, therefore, offers businesses a quality, comprehensive training programme for their employees at a vastly reduced cost to the employer. The national minimum apprenticeship wage is

the lower, not the upper limit. Therefore you could attract older or more experienced apprentices to your business by offering a higher wage or, if using an apprenticeship programme to upskill existing staff, you can continue to pay them at their current salary. It is time to stop thinking of

apprenticeships as just something for the school leaver and start equating them with other training or continuous professional development courses. When framed in this context, apprenticeships really are the new way to train your new and current staff.
