COMMENT

THE LAST WORD

ROB MAYO, Chamber President, on the issues that are worth talking about The keynote speakers and workshops went

down exceptionally well and there were some excellent collaborations and discussions taking place which I am sure will result in positive outcomes in the months to come as we continue to address a recurring issue for employers – finding and recruiting employees with suitable skills. The Chamber has never shied away from its

role in bringing business, education and key influencers and decision-makers together to address skills and employment concerns – such as the mentioned current skills gap – and events like this are absolutely crucial in forming our policies and asks moving forward.

NEW CHAMBER WEBSITE I am delighted that the Chamber’s new corporate website is now live and being utilised by members. It is a major improvement to the way the Chamber communicates with, and supports, you. The new site has received positive early feedback and has a contemporary, fresh feel to it and aligns to our five ‘hero themes’ of Grow; Connect; Skills; Influence and International Trade. There are a number of new functions on the

L-R: Chamber Board member and MD of the Belmont Hotel James Bowie with Chamber President Rob Mayo.

PRESIDENT’S SUMMER CELEBRATION The recent President’s Summer Reception was a real personal highlight for me in terms of my time as President of the Chamber. Held at the Harley Gallery, Welbeck Estate,

Nottinghamshire, the event saw a selection of Chamber members come together to celebrate our region’s businesses and those with a long-standing and valuable association with the Chamber. It was also a chance for the Chamber and

myself to thank those organisations that have shown such loyalty to the Chamber and which I am sure we will continue to serve for many years to come. Relationships like these are the foundations for regional business success and to be able to acknowledge this in such a positive way - and in glorious sunshine - was fantastic.

74 business network July/August 2018

site – which has the same www.emc-dnl.co.uk domain name – including the ability for members to upload Member Offers themselves to the site and an enhanced Members Directory with greater search capabilities. A project the size of a new website is a large undertaking and I would like to extend my thanks to the Chamber's staff and all the individuals that enabled us to get to the ‘go live’ stage. I am sure this site will be welcomed by members and serve their needs and requirements well moving forward.

EMPLOYMENT AND SKILLS SUMMIT Over 150 delegates spanning all walks of business life attended the Chamber’s recent Skills and Employability Summit, hosted by Chamber Strategic Partner Loughborough University – which to me indicates both the regard in which this important annual Chamber event is held as well as how critical the discourse surrounding employment and skills is in business.

WORLD CUP Print deadlines mean I am not in a position to comment on England’s progress at the FIFA World Cup other than the achievement of getting through the group stages, however I did want to touch on the value this global tournament can have on business here in the East Midlands. I think back to the Sunday

that saw England beat Panama 6-1 on what was a gloriously sunny day and it is fantastic to think of the trade - such as pubs and bars - that will have been done in our towns, cities and villages. Boosts like this can help

facilitate growth - and employment opportunities - for our businesses, which, as well as a boost financially, can build positive long-lasting relationships with new and existing customers and this can only be a good thing for our region and, indeed, the country as a whole. On the subject of England and international

sport, I would also like to acknowledge the tremendous efforts of both the men's and women's England cricket teams, which recorded respective limited overs world records within a day of each other recently.
