explains Phil. “We’ve worked hard over the
past few years to get the right balance in terms of industry sectors, gender and geographical and ethnic representation so we ensure a good cross-section of individuals – people with good business skills who have the capabilities to work with the Chamber to help us deliver for members. We have to make sure that we have the right spread of backgrounds of people so that we can utilise our skills. The Board itself, apart from its legal obligations, is able to use those skills and knowledge to help steer the direction of the Chamber.” So what of Phil’s individual role

where we need to be aiming in the next five-to-ten years so that we can continue to grow and serve our members to the best of our ability, especially in these challenging times with Brexit and questions around lack of investment in the
East Midlands and we’re working hard to develop these plans.” The Board is currently made up
of 18 individuals with impressive business credentials and track records who, collectively, make the Board greater than the sum of its parts.

members want goes beyond the results of the Quarterly Economic Survey, it is talking to people face-to- face, and I attend strategy and influence meetings and go to MP briefings so that I can meet members and see what their views are.”
Chambers have been prominent
business institutions for centuries, yet in an ever-changing world, it feels like these business support organisations, of which the East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) is the largest in the region, are growing in importance; a view that Phil unequivocally agrees with. “I think Chambers of Commerce
are even more vital now than they ever have been,” he argues. “The business environment is changing rapidly and will continue to change rapidly. While it most certainly isn’t all about Brexit, that’s clearly a key priority at the moment. While the Chamber has a Brexit Checklist, we still don’t know what the outcomes are going to be, so when that happens we’re going to need to move our focus to make sure that businesses can take every opportunity that they can to continue to grow and develop. “The Chamber will continue to act
on behalf of its members and myself, the Board, the Senior Leadership Team and the Chamber’s dedicated and talented staff will continue to work tirelessly to support the organisation in all of its endeavours.”
