The ‘voice of Newton Abbot’ relinquishes his Town Crier’s bell
A message from the Town Mayor 2018-2019 Councillor Ken Purchase
‘IT gives me great pleasure in being elected Mayor of Newton Abbot for the forthcoming year. I have had a great time being the Town Crier for Newton Abbot for 26 years and an ambassador. I have travelled up and down the country and overseas as well.
‘Now taking on the roll of Mayor it gives me time to tell you about our town. It is a historic market town with markets held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. We like to think that we have the ideal shopping environment. The town centre is all on one level making it easy to get round to look at our shops, not forgetting that we have our own family-owned businesses. ‘Do not worry if you are not into shopping as there is plenty to see and do: our landmark St Leonard’s Tower, Forde House, Bradley Manor, Newton Abbot Leisure Centre; a day at the races, after which you can try some of our excellent cafes and restaurants. ‘Newton Abbot Town Council has taken on a number of services devolved from the district council, which would have ceased if we had
fayre and town criers’ competition to name a few. Last year’s Summer Nights food event with live music and entertainment proved to be a huge success and is making a comeback again this year. So come and join us!’
