NATIONAL bakers chain Greggs has opened at 3 Market Walk, creating 12 new jobs. The company was created 75 years ago in Newcastle and now has more than 1,700 branches. On opening, shop manager Richard Russell said he was very proud to be in charge of the new shop and his team was ‘looking forward to hearing what the local community think’.
NEWTON Abbot Rotarian Martin Smith (pictured below) has been appointed a new trustee of the town’s Citizens Advice centre and his main aim is to ‘assist the charity in getting its message across to the wider community’.
Based on the first floor balcony of Market Square, the busy bureau has some 100 trained volunteers serving a population of 125,000 across the district providing free, confidential advice on a wide range of subjects from benefits and pensions issues to health problems and debt management. In the nine months up to January this year it had dealt with some 10,000 concerns for more than 5,000 clients. Its CEO is Vince Wilson and chairman of trustees Andrew Wilson and its address is 36-38 Market Street, 0344 411 1444, opening hours 9.30am-3.30pm Mon, Tue, Wed and Fri.
‘Newton’ goes on a meet-and-greet in the market with stallholder Jim Ashford, of Ashfords Fruit and Veg, enjoying the fun.
LOUNGERS LTD, an off-beat bar/restaurant business founded in 2002 by a trio of long- standing friends is aiming to move into the Tony Pryce sports shop premises in Queen Street. Noted for its eccentric interiors, from old paintings and lampshades to battered arm chairs and loud seventies wallpaper, its interior designs can still be sympathetic to specific areas with murals celebrating the history and spirit of the local community.
...AND
GOODBYE
NEWTON Abbot Market said farewell in March to the popular Hancox family who have traded there for more than 40 years, starting in the early 1970s when son Mark was just a baby.
From Kingskerswell, the family sold books, records and model cars from their stall. Father John, a lifetime Elvis Presley fan, is a former employee of the old Mid-Devon Advertiser print works.
