NEWTONAbbot Jobcentre has moved to the district council offices at Forde House, vacating its former Kingsteignton Road offices. The new facility cost £1.1 million and is situated in former ground floor reception and planning area of the council’s HQ where it was formally opened by council leader Jeremy Christophers. It includes computers and interview rooms and the manager is Cheryl Ward. Teignbridge Council’s former head of paid services Phil Shears has been appointed the authority’s Managing Director. Mr Shears has worked for Teignbridge Council for 25 years and was deputy to former Teignbridge Council chief executive Nicola Bulbeck, who is now executive director for West Sussex County Council. Newton Abbot and District Civic Society celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. It was founded by Lord of the Manorial Borough Keith Stokes Smith in 1997 to improve the local environment and chairman is Martin Davie and vice chairman Roger Keys. The society can be contacted via

are now five allotments administered by the town council and ranging from 22 to 106 plots: Blake’s, Bradley, Coach Road, Cooke’s and Decoy. And there is a waiting list. Lord Clifford of Chudleigh is association president.
MORE than £7,000 was given to community groups by the town council last year, including Citizen’s Advice, Newton Abbot and District Society of Arts, community transport and suicide bereavement support group Pete’s Dragon. Cllr Ann Jones, 2017-18 Mayor, presented cheques worth £5,800 at a town hall grants ceremony and a further £1,500 was awarded to Teignbridge Community Safety Partnership to help combat anti-social behaviour in the area.
